Getting Around This Weekend
Can't go skiing this weekend because there's nothing around here to ski on? Some Virginians are on a four-day weekend, thanks to the Lee-Jackson Day state holiday on Friday. While others must settle for the three-day weekend provided by the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday on Monday.
The weather outlook isn't great for travelers, but at least it's consistent: It's a headlights and windshield wipers weekend. Showers through Monday, with high temperatures in the 50s and lows in the high 30s and 40s.
If you're hanging around town, and maybe taking in the "Monster Jam" of trucks at Verizon Center or "King Lear" at the Folger Shakespeare Library (anybody got tickets for both?) or seeing "King: A Filmed Record" at the AFI Silver Theatre, you can reach all of those by Metro. But here are some things to know about the weekend transit schedule:
-- Track work: Arlington Cemetery Station will be closed and the Blue Line will be shut down between Pentagon and Rosslyn. That leads to changes in service on other lines.
-- Changes on Blue, Yellow, Orange Lines: From 8 p.m. Friday through Monday night, the Blue Line will be diverted so that it follows the Yellow Line route between Pentagon and Mount Vernon Square. Yellow Line service will be extended all the way up to Greenbelt. The Orange Line trains will be the only ones you'll see along the route between Vienna and New Carrollton and Largo Town Center stations. (So don't be standing on the platform at Foggy Bottom waiting for a Blue Line train. You'll be waiting till Tuesday.)
-- Monday is a regular weekday for Metro fares: Trains, buses and parking places operated by the transit authority will charge the regular weekday fees. (Parking is free on Saturday and Sunday.)
-- Monday train times: All Blue, Orange and Yellow Line trains will operate every eight minutes during the peak periods. Off-peak trains on those three lines will operate every 12 to 15 minutes. No schedule changes for the Red and Green lines.
-- Arlington Cemetery Detour: While the station is closed, there's a free shuttle bus service every five minutes between the Pentagon and Rosslyn stations with a stop at the Arlington Cemetery Metrorail station until 7 p.m., on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
-- The Trip Planner: The travel calculator on Metro's Web site is normally a very handy tool for getting around the transit system, but it won't reflect the service changes described above for this weekend.
-- Transit map: Here's a link to a Metro map that displays the changes.
-- Ride On: On Monday, Montgomery County's bus system will run regular weekday service on all routes.
