Road and Transit Developments

Drivers and riders, here's a roundup of some developments that could affect your commutes in the next few weeks.

Metro elevators out: The platform elevators at McPherson Square will be out of service for the next 10 weeks for a modernization. Free shuttle buses will be available upon request. Metrorail riders who normally enter or exit at the station and are unable to use the escalator can call 202-962-1825 in advance of their trips so a shuttle bus can be waiting to take them to the Farragut West Station..

-- Bus route extended: The downtown Washington Circulator bus route will be extended to replace the Georgetown Metro Connection, or "Blue Bus," on the Foggy Bottom line. You can find a Circulator map please at www.dccirculator.com
This is a six-month trial, to run through Sept. 30. The Blue Bus will continue running its route between Roslyn and Dupont Circle.

-- Route 197 work: The Maryland State Highway Administration will replace a sound barrier along northbound Route 197 (Laurel Bowie Road) between Contee Road and Montpelier Road in Laurel. Single-lane closures will likely occur Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

-- VRE's Fredericksburg Station: The Lot F is closing. VRE says the owners of the property plan to rehabilitate a building there and are worried about conducting work with heavy machinery near riders' vehicles.
So those 83 parking spaces at 400 Charles Street will be unavailable to riders after Friday, March 23. VRE is recommending that riders consider the parking garage on Sophia Street. In addition, parking remains in the secondary lot at Leeland Road and at the Brooke Station.

-- Valet bike parking: Once again, bike riders will be able to use valet parking during the Cherry Blossom Festival. The program will be expanded from one to two sites. Bikers can leave their cycles free of charge at secure, staffed areas at 15 th Street and Independence Avenue SW and at the southwest corner of the Jefferson Memorial on Saturdays and Sundays during the festival, which runs from March 31 to April 15.

-- Wilson Bridge project: From 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, the left lane on the outer loop of the Beltway between Telegraph Road and Route 1 is scheduled to be closed for overhead bridge work.

-- Work on Nice Bridge: There will be alternating lane closures on the Harry W. Nice Memorial Bridge, which takes Route 301 over the Potomac River. This is for routine maintenance. The lane closings will occur between 9 a.m. and 3 pm. Monday through Thursday this week and from 9 a.m. to noon on Friday. During those times, trucks greater than 11-feet wide will not be permitted to cross the bridge.
