Reaching the Beach By Rail?

The letter makes some strong points for rail -- but don't most vacationers need their cars once they're there?

I like the enthusiasm, but this is a case where buses make more sense. Beach traffic is bad on the weekends - and only in the summer, whereas city traffic is bad on weekdays at rush hour. Most transit systems have buses that sit idle on the weekends. It makes more sense to take those already existing buses and run them from points in the DC and Baltimore areas then build a new rail line (and I love trains). In order to make sure they're full, make them free. Run them from Friday at Noon to Monday 6am - to Dewey Beach, Ocean City and Rehobeth. Pay for them with a small increase of the bridge toll. The Dewey Beach bus will become something of a rolling party I suspect.

Ed had me until he pulled the garbage argument about cars "How much more pollution would it make? How many more people would it kill?" This ludicrous statement is ignorant and baseless. Rail uses diesel-electric or pure electric. Even ignoring the infrastructure that has to be put in place for these, the pure electric power has to come from somewhere. Diesel is an easy argument, no better than gasoline. Most likely for pure electric, though, it is filthy coal, which releases much more CO2 than gas/diesel plus other nasty stuff like mercury, particulates, NOx, etc. Look at the whole picture. This narrow minded, selfish view is what has DC in the mess it is in now as far as transportation.

Good points for rail. One neglected data point: summer only. Would the state spend that kind of money for infrastructure that'll get used 5 or 6 months of the year?

Delaware won't even invest in decent roads to enable Washingtonians to reach its beaches. The chances that it would spend money on rail are zero.

Steven, Rail is cleaner than cars. True - both get energy from some place, but on a fuel per passenger mile basis rail is better. Additionally, a train's engine is cleaner than a car's engine - largely because cars are more weight sensitive than railroads are. What's another 100 pounds to a railroad engine? So the pounds of pollution per passenger mile gets even better. If you power the train by electricty, the pounds-of-pollution per passenger miles for rail becomes almost a thousand times better. As dirty as your average power plant is, it's significantly cleaner and more efficient than a car engine.

One word to describe this proposal: BOONDOGGLE

What a crazy idea. How about building a commuter line out to Dulles and Leesburg and beyond rather than the stupid silver line? We already have a commuter rail right of way (WO&D) that could be used and commuter rail is going to be alot more effective for getting from downtown out to IAD in a reasonable timeframe.

Yeah, I know that WO&D right of way is a trail now. Too bad. We need more commuter rail options in Virginia and we have enough recreational options like the Mt. Vernon trail and C&O Canal.

I'm always surprised by rail abandonments in urban areas where there could be some use for future commuter lines.

Something needs to be done to remedy the constant delays between the Bay Bridge and the beaches. If it keeps getting worse people will look elsewhere to spend their vacation dollars. 404 needs to be widened to two lanes each way, which will speed 404 traffic and take some additional congestion from route 50. Maybe a rail/bus line in addition to road widening. There is just too much development at the beach for the antiquated roads to handle.

No way a rail line is financially viable year round. And where on the Shore are folks going to find their long-term parking in all the wetlands critical areas? Those things gotta be permitted ya know. Lovely to see such a groundswell of support for a fiasco of a project that runs through someone else's community and that would be funded by someone else's state. Seasonal high-speed ferry and bus connections connections would be a more prudent way to go, but even then, you're talking about a all that expense for only 3 months out of the year. I think it'd be difficult to find an operator that can work that profitably.

Yes, lets widen Route 50 from the Beltway to where 404 splits off. Of course this means we'll need to build a third span for the Bay Bridge. Lets 6-lane Route 404 all the way to Rehoboth. Lets knock down some of the boardwalk in Rehoboth and build a parking garage or two since surely all those cars will need a place to park. Lets build the rail line too. In fact lets have first-class cars since those would be nice. But most importantly for sure....lets have someone else pay for it, because we don't want to pay higher taxes or even user fees, because those are just taxes in disguise! Maybe if we eliminate funding for the Baltimore Beltway, because the majority of Washingtonians don't use it often, then we'll have more money for roads to the beach! Who cares if Baltimore people need to commute on it...my needs are more important then theirs!! Yup, I'm sure that's what the majority of people are thinking.

People have said they don't want to raise taxes....well you have to pick which is more imporant to you...commuter roads/rails which everyone uses everyday, or roads to the beach for the rich to use a couple times a year. The powers that be have chosen the former, not the latter.

Great point. You're right, the state doesn't receive any tax revenue in the form of sales tax, gas tax, property taxes etc. from the people using the eastern shore beaches. Instead, let's just stay here are drive around the Baltimore beltway. Maybe they'll put up a custard stand and we'll call it a vacation.

Okay Stuck in 404 Traffic, I think we both gave each other a good little laugh. But my original point stands: People seem to want a lot but don't seem to want any part of paying for it. The people that want it think their cause is more important than someone else's cause, and want existing funds diverted from someone else's cause to their own. Just because a certain special group of people like to head to the beach doesn't mean that there aren't higher priority transportation projects in Maryland.

Of course, I secretly suspect that Maryland is dragging their feet on 404 improvements on purpose. Afterall, anyone who stays on Route 50 is going to a Maryland beach, where anyone turning off onto 404 is going to a beach in another state. Improvements for 404 are on the books though, and the entire road was built on a 4-lane right of way, so all they need to do is find some money, get the permits, and start grading and paving. Unfortunately, Delaware has no plans to upgrade it's section of 404 (which is ironic, given that it will help their state). I think there are plans to make Route 50 a 6-lane freeway (no more traffic lights) between Route 301 and Route 404. But unfortunately, this will just shove more traffic into a horribly overburdoned Bay Bridge, which the state wants to provide relief to, but many Eastern Shore residents are resisting. Since I think it is dumb to make Eastern Shore residents pay for a road that is not needed 8 months of the year (and during the remaining four, is only really needed Friday to Sunday of each week), I think a toll might be in order. Shouldn't be an undue hardship on tourists, since its not like we go to the beach everyday. Besides, if you're paying lord knows how much for a beach condo/hotel, and gas, what's another few dollars?

Actually, I forgot to mention that while we are waiting for 404 fixes, there are far better ways to get to Rehoboth from DC area (and by far better ways, I mean empty roads most of the way). Check a map, and pick just about any route that avoids all or most of 404, and you might actually get there faster.

I agree that Route 404 from Route 50 headed east to and through Denton is a nightmare. It should have been widened ten years ago to a four lane highway. The current phase of the widening project has been going on for at least three years... too darn long.

he thing most of you are missing though is once you get east of Denton, there are alot of good options to continue east that avoid Route 404 entirely. As someone else already noted, many of these alternates are entirely empty. I think there is less of a need for DE to do something about its portion of 404.

DE should really be focusing on gridlocked Route 1 from Lewes down to the left hand turn for Rehoboth Ave (Route 1A). I'm not a traffic engineer but there has got to be a better way of managing and improving traffic flow. The addition of a dedicated right turn lane in addition to the three through lanes is a good start, but there is a new traffic signal in this stretch once every few months. The signals have never been synchronized either.

Ideally, it be great to build a controlled access bypass to the congested Route 1 (something that runs parallel to the existing road but further inland), however I think we're all fooling ourselves because it will never happen. The least Delaware DOT can do is improve traffic flow which must include synchronizing the scores of traffic signals. Lets just hope DE DOT doesn't go looking for advice over at VA's DOT.

This is completely off-topic but has anyone else noticed that the long-term workzone on the inner loop on the ALB is gone?? The construction barriers and all the "heavy equipment" that was in place on the bridge for months has been removed and the transition lane is reopened.

Yes, I noticed last night (Thursday) going home that the curb lane was open and I believe that it was also open during the morning rush hours.

The evening before (Wednesday) I also used that lane to exit onto Clara Barton. It was not open the complete distance but did become open much earlier than it had before that.

This tells me that the workers must have worked much harder that originally planned when "they" were saying it would be September before it was free. I for one want to thank them.

And Yes, Laura, Dr G must have taken a long weekend like so many from MoCo, my drive in through Silver Spring and Bethesda went sooo quickly it felt like I was in the twilight zone...one last day before school starts. [sigh]

Why is Prince George's County not on the list of regions on the Live Traffic Reports page?! I'm fed up with sitting on 95 or the BW Pkwy in PG Co. and hearing about traffic everywhere else--particularly when the traffic everywhere else is normal, everyday traffic, not the result of an accident. Several major highways pass through PG County , but don't get the attention that roads in other areas get, i.e., 270 and the Virginia roads. For a long time I didn't take this seriously, but now it's quite obvious and I'm fed up.
