Metro Looking at New Message Boards
Metro is looking at a new system of big flat screen display panels to carry advertising, information and entertainment in the rail stations, on buses and at bus shelters.
The video screens would supplement the electronic boards that display the times and car lengths of arriving trains, as well as some other information about delays and elevator problems. The contract with the company that puts advertising throughout the transit system expires in 2010, and Metro plans to seek proposals from companies interested in using the new technology for a contract that would run about 10 years.
Metro could customize the displays for individual stations, and in an emergency could take over control of the boards to get more information to passengers, such as information about bus shuttles around problems.
So far so good. But a Metro board committee this morning spent about 45 minutes on questions and comments about how the new display panels might work.
Some issues:
-- Should they make noise? Metro managers are working with various riders' committees on details about the program, and in discussing this with the committee for elderly and disabled riders the question arose of whether the new system should involve audio as well as video.
That would help people with eye problems, but do riders generally want more noise? Metro board member Chris Zimmerman of Arlington noted that it's important in developing a contract to distinguish between the needs of customers and the needs of advertisers. Zimmerman doesn't want the request for proposals to suggest that advertisers can have audio.
If a rider doesn't want to see a video display, the rider can turn away, Zimmerman said, but "sound is imposed upon me." He added that it's tough enough to hear the station announcements without noise competition from another source.
Board member Jim Graham of the District, who had been watching the demonstration screen showing movie trailers for The Endless Summer and Terminator 2, said he had a real problem with the video part of the program.
"I don't think I'm going to be able to support this," he said, after watching piles of skulls and heads crashing through glass in the T2 trailer, which was approved for all audiences.
There's a big difference between poster ads and video, Graham said: "This seems to be a substantial escalation." He fears that the transit authority would be unable to control the content displayed in ads that could set off waves of complaints from riders.
Figuring out what to do with these displays, or whether to have them at all, will be part of Metro's growing pains. The transit authority, which just imposed the largest fare increase in its history, is looking for other ways besides fares to make money, and this proposal has possibilities. And like the music in the stations program, it's also a way of enlivening the experience of using the stations, and perhaps attracting more riders.

Who will be paying for these expensive new toys?
Metro already can't put useful information on the signs they have. Some stations just display the time, elevator outages a few states away, or completely wrong train arrival information. Why should we expect anything better?

The sample screens that were part of the presentation to the Metro Board have huge advertisements taking up most of the area of the display with the useful information relegated to a small % of the screen.
For these things to be useful to customers, the useful information needs to be viewable at a quick glance. Which means next train info and such needs to be more prominent than on the prototype.

I would assume that the Metro would not have to pay a penny for the new flat screen panels and would be brining in revenue for selling the rights. If this system allows them to provide as much or more information to the riders than currently available and makes money which allows them to avoid future fair hikes, I am in full support. But please, no audio.

It's still a waste of their efforts, and with the way advertising works in the system now Metro will probably end up having to pay for maintenance of them and there will be no advertisers (or we'll get 4 month old ads like on the trains).

I hope Metro pulls all of their maintenance workers who we see working so hard, every day, fixing escalators and cleaning stations from those duties to help install these things.
What a dumb idea. It's just more crap that can break. As for paying for itself... When has anything Metro's ever done paid for itself?
How about fixing what they already have before trying to install new, unnecessary features.

More rider info would be great. But for the advertisers to be willing to pay for it, the rider info will be relegated into a corner.

The Sunoco station I usually use recently installed TV monitors above each pump. They mostly play advertising and you can't mute the sound. Drives me nuts. I give a big thumbs-down to any similar context on the Metro. VISUAL ads, no problem if they don't interfere with the purpose of the message boards. Audible ads, no thanks.

There's enough noise on platforms already with the constant barrage of metro PA reminders (please stand to the right, do you want to pay a fine for eating, these elevators are out of service, etc.). Please no more noise.
Why doesn't metro investigate less high tech advertising to bring in revenue, i.e. More adds in/on trains, on the platforms and stations, in the tunnels, and just any available flat space? I feel like this is an underutelized resource.

Laura, advertising isn't some wonderful solution to anything. Metro takes in $35 million a year in advertising and spends $2.2 billion (some of which is probably maintaining the advertising) on operations. It's a drop in the bucket.

welcome to the 20th century, Metro! Having used the systems in many other cities I have to say it's about time this comes to Metro. However, they can't even make the signs on the platforms now accurate how do they expect these to be accurate? I like the idea of it seeming more hi-tech and modern. Most people have an mp3 player in their ears anyway so they won't have to hear the ads. These sorts of screens tend to be nice and bright which I also like.
Ride the TTC in Toronto. They have video boards that show time, weather, and news with some commercials. Ride the SkyTrain in Bangkok and there are video monitors in the stations mainly showing ads, and they have screens in the trains doing the same. They tend to be a little loud for my taste, but it sort of adds some energy.
Give people something to watch and they will. And it might make them care less about the fact that the trains are 10 minutes apart instead of 6.

"[E]nlivening the experience of using the stations"? "[A]ttracting more riders"?! Why not just turn Metro over to Disney? This proposal basically smacks of Metro being hypnotized by bright flashing lights and cool A/V equipment, with all of the purported benefits merely post-hoc rationalizations.
That said, there are a couple of modifications to that system that strike me as reasonable, e.g.: dedicate some screens to ads and some to system info, rather than trying to cram both onto every screen; allow audible ads on mezzanines but not on platforms, or even just not on underground platforms.
If there is going to be audio, though, Metro had better have control over the ads shown: it's one thing to have political ads on the walls, but it'd be quite another to have them forced into one's ear.

More noise is unacceptable. It is already bad enough that we have to listen to incomprehensible station announcements and passengers on cell phones (please, please don't expand make that service more available).

As for displaying advertising as well as transit information, they have color LED displays in the trains in Montreal that display, alternately, the next station (and transfer info) and advertising. So, you want to know if Bonaventure station is coming up? Sorry, currently we're showing an ad for Cirque du Soleil.

I never said it was. But these panels are first and foremost a way to provide advertising space in the system, thus bringing in advertising revenue (which is all i was commenting on, not that metro should be able to fix it's budget entirely from advertising revenue). I personally think that the lo-tech versions of advertising in the system (signs, banners, billboards, etc.) are underutelize and you should maximize these first before moving to something so high tech. And when you are talking about a contract of 10 years, yes, you are talking about a significant about of advertising revenue.
What happens when these malfunction, get broken, or are vandalized. Who pays to fix them? And you can bet they won't be fixed quickly (why would they, nothing else in metro is ever fixed quickly). I've seen so much graffitti on the normal ads in the metro system, not to mention signs that have been completely ripped down, stolen, etc. Why would these be immune?
