Parkway Paving Postponed

The repaving on Rock Creek Parkway that had been scheduled to start today has been postponed for a week.

The National Park Service says this weekend's weather forecast, which includes the possibility of thunderstorms, could have posed a problem for the paving project on the parkway's southbound side between P Street and Virginia Avenue.

Here's the new plan:
The southbound curb lane will be closed Friday, April 18, after noon. Then at midnight, the southbound P Street ramp will close, reopening after noon on Saturday. On Sunday, the Pennsylvania Avenue and K Street ramps will be repaved, so they can reopen by 6:30 a.m. Monday, April 21.

Three travel lanes will remain open both northbound and southbound during the paving operations.

The Thompson's Boat Center parking lot will close for repaving on Monday, April 21, after 7 p.m. and reopen Tuesday, April 22 at noon.

So does that mean the southbound right lane has been re-opened for the next week? I haven't been on the parkway all week (left the car in the suburbs all week and rode Metro to work) so I have no idea what kind of progress has been made in the last week.

From Dr. Gridlock: WP, the paving job that got postponed was originally supposed to start this afternoon. I don't believe there's been anything else closing the southbound side. So it would be open till the postponed work starts next Friday.

No such luck...the lane is still closed. Oh well!

I wish Civil Construction, the company that has the contract for the Rock Creek Pkwy, had a website where we could leave complaints. What a poorly managed project by the Park Service/Federal Highways and the contractor.

How about these contractors take advantage of an opportunity while the going is good? There is virtually no threat of rain in the forecast from now until Friday. Invariably though, there will be a possibility of rain this weekend and the project will get postponed yet again. Frankly, I shouldn't be surprised though; this is status quo with how this whole RCP improvement project has gone.
