VRE Considering New Service

I hope this doesn't turn out to be wishful thinking, given Virginia's inability to come up with a serious plan for transportation improvements, but Virginia Railway Express has scheduled a public workshop for tonight to discuss a new 11-mile branch from Manassas to Haymarket.

VRE says the proposed route follows Norfolk Southern's B line. It could include as many as three new stations. (See VRE's list of FAQs on the project.)

This study will build on a previous one completed in 2005, VRE says. The latest effort, to be completed in March (see schedule), will get into greater detail about station locations, the support system for the line and expenses.

The workshop is set for 6:30 to 9 p.m. at Stonewall Jackson High School, 8820 Rixlew Lane, Manassas. The first half hour is an open house, followed by a presentation at 7 p.m.

Any news on the MARC extension into Southern Maryland? That would be welcome news.

Maybe VRE should consider a stop close to Nissan Pavillon and run party trains to concerts. Can you see the train going to see James Delaney Buffet! Concert goers may never get off the train and it would cut down on the business for bail bondsmen in PWC.

I was going to suggest something like anon's thoughts, though a bit less jackassish. The only problem is everyone would have to park at Union Station to use that train since Metro shuts down not long after most concerts are over on weeknights.

The local infrastructure can't even handle a basic commute and you douchebags are worrying about concerts? Get a freaking iPod.

There are local jobs around you and you can't even handle a basic commute? Get a freaking life.
