Commuter Graphic: Good to the Last Drop

Use cruise control?

Good one.

Yeah, we all get GREAT gas mileage sitting in bumper to bumper traffic going 0-5 mph. And in the case of the DTR, PAYING for the privilege!

Thanks for nothing, VDOT and the General Assembly!

Everyone in the Reston, Herndon, Sterling area of NoVA has gotten great gas mileage sitting in STOPPED traffic yesterday morning and this morning due to a host of poorly planned construction projects all within a stone's throw of each other. You think they could better time these projects:

1. Paving project on Route 7 at Reston Parkway, one of 2 lanes closed eastbound starting at 9am - they weren't really even paving the right lane just using it as a staging area for trucks to pave the turning lane. Delays at 9:30am yesterday began at Sterling Blvd. 9am is still the height of morning rush especially in summer when the morning commute seems to move later. (Schools start Sept 2 in all of NOVA.)

2. Paving project on Wiehle Avenue at Reston Parkway. Wiehle Avenue was CLOSED eastbound at the Reston Parkway at 9am this morning for paving. The best alternate off Route 7 to get to points east from Sterling is Fairfax County Pkwy to Wiehle which dumps you in the middle of construction project #2.

3. Road widening project on Beulah Rd at Route 7, eastbound right lane on Route 7 closed starting just before Beulah. This is the best of all: even though Beulah Rd. is completely closed for the entire month, the traffic signal still turns green for Beulah Rd (the entirely closed street) while everyone sits in the single lane of traffic on Route 7.

I agree these projects all need to be done and the seasonal window for road projects will be closed in 3 months, but all of these projects at the same time in such close geographic proximity does nothing for our gas mileage. Thanks VDOT.

So Beulah Rd is a traffic stop to nowhere? Somebody needs to take one for the team and knock over the light pole.

Any sign of when the Foggy Bottom Metro station might get at least one of its three escalators to work?

I say that to get on and off the Dulles Toll Road there should be an EZPass Only Lane in place of the Exact Change lane. The people that glide up with exact change delay just as long as the people who are using a buck or $5 bill.

Why not have EZPass only lanes, that way it would increase the number of people who get an EZPass and keep traffic moving onto the Toll Road.

I've seen the same people day-in and day-out getting on/off the Toll Road paying with cash, holding up lines of people who were green enough to think that stopping for the tolls is bad for the environment.

Look, you rich, over-entitled, under-worked, over-paid, pea-brained, 2007 or newer Benz E-Class-driving PENDEJOS: The little lever on your steering column in not there as a replica of your own "endowment" (or lack of), to be stroked but never used. It is a TURN SIGNAL, and it is to be used EVERY TIME you change lanes or make a turn. EVERY TIME. Do you understand? Comprende??? YOU SUCK!

Posted by: CyanSquirrel | August 27, 2008 9:35 AM | Report abuse

CyanSquirrel, what the fukc did you stick up your anus this morning? Nobody uses turn signals, there's no reason to target wealthy wetbacks.

Posted by: Anonymous | August 27, 2008 11:43 AM | Report abuse

You don't use your turn signal, because some other "get there first" asshat will close the gap, regardless of size, available space, etc., that you are trying to move into. Me first, comprende?

Therefore, the best defense is a good offense, driving in the cesspool that is DC/NoVA/MD.

Posted by: Incorrect, Cyan | August 27, 2008 1:30 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, well I use my turn signal every time and if I, a commoner, can manage to do that, then I expect, no I DEMAND that these WHITE, middle aged, male "professional" gigolos (I wasn't referring to wetbacks, Anon...Spanish isn't censored...yet) I see all over NoVa do the same. Especially if they drive within my eye-shot.

There is a lot of bad driving, yes, and this morning I had enough. My zen broke. The guy who did it to me (third in a row within a few blocks...such disregard for anyone else's safety people!!) got an long loud horn. And then a lesson in the use of turn signals at the stop light. He's a fast learner because he sure did use his signal when he went to turn into work at near the Embassy Suites complex off Duke Street. You suck! Next?

CyanSquirrel, why don't you expect the darkies and the hos to let you in?

suckit, go back to school and improve your reading comprehension. Your post was completely off the mark.

You are in no position to demand anything, and it sounds like you have an anger management problem. Just like everyone else on the roads in this hellhole.

You can demand whatever you want - nothing will change, and it will only get worse. There's no funding for any improvements, ever-increasing cars on the roads, delays, etc. The only option is to move out of the area. Frustrating? Absolutely. But it's the only choice.

Posted by: Anonymous | August 27, 2008 11:36 PM | Report abuse

We don't need road improvements, we need more bloated salaries for do-nothing Metro employees.

Why do you hate mother earth?

Anonymous, be the change you wish to see in the world. Starting with laying off the snarky comments just because someone wanted to vent! Good heavens! Stupid trolls. Is no one NICE and CIVIL to anyone else on these boards anymore? Can anyone make a comment without the babies coming out and making 3-year-old worthy comments? This whole forum belongs to a bunch of preschoolers, save for the consistent few with intelligent comments.

It's funny...everyone I encountered this morning on the commute used a turn signal. Must have just been a bad day yesterday.

Posted by: CyanSquirrel | August 28, 2008 10:48 AM | Report abuse

And, can you please tell me why expecting people to follow social graces and have manners in public is such a bad thing that you have to whip out the "they have anger problems" card? Why are people who expect humans to ACT like humans vilified? Every one of the drivers in this are needs a good hard swat to the rear and a reminder from their momma to behave and play well with others.

I laugh at your anger management comment. You must have missed the "my zen was broken" comment I made. 99% of the time, I tune out even the worst offenders. However, EVERYONE HAS A SNAPPING POINT! To label me as someone with anger management problems because of one single incident is ludicrous. Of course, we are all sinners, so while you point the finger at me, take note of the three pointing right back at you. The unabashed labeling that goes on in these forums every time someone takes the time to contribute to the conversation is what has led to the decline of this board and of participation from the levels it used to be. Congrats anonymous, you win. Enjoy your Pyrrhic victories.

So Dr. Gridlock, i hear all three elevators are now broken at Foggy Bottom.

Posted by: chuck | August 28, 2008 1:05 PM | Report abuse

Dr. Gridlock is apparently on vacation... no posts about the Bay Bridge fiasco this weekend, etc.

Posted by: BOHICA! | August 28, 2008 2:33 PM | Report abuse

Foggy Bottom is Fukced.

And bluerodent, so are you.

"Dr. Gridlock is apparently on vacation... no posts about the Bay Bridge fiasco this weekend, etc."

Also, be aware of the track work on the blue and yellow lines that will cause major delays for those trying to get to or from the Regan airport this weekend.

Dr Gridlock has some competition.

Posted by: Anonymous | August 28, 2008 10:04 PM | Report abuse

WTF?!? New post today about the weekend and they talk about crosswalks and getting your driveway apron repaved, not about the Bay Bridge work that is snarling holiday traffic, labor day traffic in general, or weekend metro trackwork.

Not sure who posted it, as it seems Dr. G is on an extended vacation, but really WaPo can't you find someone to post on these topics? The top of the blog says "with Dr. Gridlock and The Post's Transportation Team." Who's on this transportation team? Good job losing readers...

They're between interns.

Interesting, they've also banned comments for the post about the weekend.

I wanted to point out that stop lines are meaningless. They're not going to protect pedestrians because nobody respects them. Just take a look at any intersection where cars usually either straddle the stop line or pull entirely ahead of it.

Hey anon,

Dang right I get some. Jealous schmuck.

May God bless you regardless, anon. Jesus loves each one of us, despite the fact that some of us are so devoid of love and rotten to the core. May His love bless you regardless of how you treat me.

"Not sure who posted it, as it seems Dr. G is on an extended vacation...."

I noticed last week that Robert Thomson's byline is missing from all these entries (as well as today's two new ones) and I wondered if that was due to some sort of a problem with the software update they did a few weeks back or whether it indicated a change in staffing.
