The Weekend and Beyond

Some advice for your upcoming travels:

Metrorail Delays
Switch replacement work at Friendship Heights on the Red Line and track maintenance on the Blue and Yellow lines this weekend will cause inbound and outbound trains to take turns sharing one track. For full details, follow this link to Metro's Web site.

Inbound and outbound trains between Medical Center and Van Ness will share a single track from 9 o'clock tonight to the train system's midnight closing on Sunday. That will add at least 20 minutes to trips.

Metrorail customers traveling between the Van Dorn Street and Braddock Road Metrorail stations should add at least 20 minutes of travel time for their trips because of track maintenance.

Trains will share a track between Van Dorn Street and Braddock Road from 11 o'clock to the 3 o'clock closing on Saturday morning, then again from from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. That also will add at least 20 minutes to trips.

Route 7 Lanes
The Virginia Department of Transportation plans to close one lane in each direction on Route 7 in the River Creek Parkway area south of Leesburg this weekend. The roadway will be reduced to a single lane in each direction while VDOT installs a storm water pipe.

The lane closings are scheduled for 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. tonight and Saturday night. If necessary, the traffic also may be routed to a single lane again on Sunday at 8 p.m. until 5 a.m. Monday.

Sunday Street Closings Downtown
ColdPlay is performing at Verizon Center on Sunday at 7:30 p.m., and DDOT says F Street NW will be closed between 6th and 7th streets NW before and after the concert for the safety of the concert-goers. Watch for heavier than normal traffic around there.

Parkway Bridge Closing
Maryland is going to close and repair the bridge that takes westbound traffic from the Clara Barton Parkway onto the southbound Capital Beltway just north of the American Legion Bridge. Drivers will use a detour for about 10 weeks.

The ramp, to be closed Monday, carries about 600 vehicles a day, says David Buck, spokesman for the Maryland State Highway Administration. For those drivers, the diversion should add no more than five minutes to their trips.

This is the detour: Take westbound Clara Barton Parkway to the next exit at the Naval Surface Warfare Center. Traffic will cross over the parkway, making two left turns, and exit back onto the parkway heading eastbound. Drivers will then take a left exit to southbound Interstate 495.

E Street Expressway Ramp
The District is scheduled to begin repairs to the ramp leading from the E Street Expressway to westbound I-66 on Monday. The repairs are scheduled to take about three weeks, and the ramp should reopen by Aug. 25.

Detour: Follow directions to the northbound Potomac River Freeway, then go left onto 27th Street NW, then make an immediate left onto southbound Potomac River Freeway, then get onto westbound I-66.

Beltway Ramp Opened
On the east side of the Beltway, a new flyover ramp is taking traffic from the inner loop to southbound Branch Avenue. Watch for the message boards that will guide drivers through the new traffic pattern.

The ramp, built to ease congestion and eliminate the difficult merge at the Branch Avenue/Beltway interchange, is part of a $52 million reconstruction of the interchange that began in March 2006 and is scheduled to be done by the end of this year.

Bridge in Rehab
Note for visitors to the Aug. 6-10 Arlington County Fair at the Thomas Jefferson Community Center: The pedestrian bridge over Arlington Boulevard at North Jackson Street is closed for repair. The half-million dollar project started in May and is scheduled to be done by fall. The decking is being replaced, and the bridge, built in the mid-1970s, also will get new lighting, railings and a roof.

Nice Bridge Restrictions
Watch for single lane closures on the Route 301 bridge over the Potomac River through Aug. 28. Workers are installing cable and conduit across the bridge. From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, traffic alternates directions in the open lane.

West Basin Drive
On Tuesday, the National Park Service plans to close part of West Basin Drive between the FDR Memorial and westbound Independence Avenue SW. This work, for a utility relocation project, is expected to last just one day.
Detour: Follow eastbound Independence Avenue over Kutz Bridge, then turn left onto westbound Independence just after crossing the bridge.

Route 28 Closures
There will be single lane closures at Route 28 and Frying Pan Road for the interchange construction. The hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

Rock Creek Roads
From 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday, maintenance workers will be repairing Glover Road, which will be closed from the Rock Creek Park Maintenance Yard to Broad Branch Road NW.

At the same times, Ross Drive will be closed from Joyce Road to Glover Road NW to provide space for the equipment and protect the workers.
