Bus Changes Affect Commuters Today

Commuters across the region are encountering some changes in bus routes and schedules this morning. At Silver Spring Station, the Metrobuses and the Montgomery County Ride Ons that had been loading and unloading near the station entrance have moved out onto the surrounding streets. Across the region, some Metrobus routes are starting new weekday schedules.

Caution at Silver Spring
This will be a confusing day for most people who use the station or just past by in their cars. Most everything but the tracks and platforms are in a different place. All the buses are using new stops on the streets around the station, the Metro Kiss & Ride is inside a parking garage, the taxi stand moved a bit and there's a new path to the northbound side of the MARC station.

Commuters will be checking the metal signs around the perimeter that display maps showing where all the new stuff is, but if you click here, you can make a printout of the same thing.

Drivers, you're going to see some dazed-looking pedestrians around there today. Be extra careful around the station and the Discovery building.

Look for crossing guards, who will be on duty from 6:30 to 9:30 a.m. and from 4 to 7 p.m. Police will have extra patrols in the area from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. There are signs in Braille at all the new bus stops, and most of the traffic signals now have push buttons and information for pedestrians.

Route Changes
Metro adjusts its schedules from time to time to add service, adjust schedules, or at least bring the timetables closer to reality. In this round changes were made to both weekend and weekday schedules. You can see the full list here, but these are the ones affecting your weekday travels:

Route 5A: Metro is adding buses to ease crowding on the District to Dulles Airport line and also is adjusting the old schedule. Additional trips to Dulles leave D and 7th streets SW at 6:25 a.m., 2:30 and 4:30 p.m. Additional trips from Dulles leave at 7:30 a.m., 3:45 and 5:45 p.m.

The westbound trips that used to leave D and 7th streets at 6:10, 6:50 and 8:15 a.m. and at 1:30, 2:10, 2:55, 3:35, 4:10 and 4:50 p.m. now leave at 6, 6:55 and 8:10 a.m. and at 1:25, 2, 3, 3:30, 4 and 5 p.m. The eastbound trips that used to leave the airport at 7:10 a.m. and at 2:40, 3:20, 4:05, 5:25 and 6:05 p.m. now depart at 7 a.m. and at 2:35, 3:10, 4:15, 5:15 and 6:15 p.m.

B24, 25 (Bowie-Belair): Trips from New Carrollton Station before 5:30 p.m. now run as B25s and operate on Health Center Drive. After 5:30 p.m., buses from New Carrollton run as B24s. They do not operate on Health Center Drive.

Buses going to New Carrollton run as B24s. Customers traveling from Health Center Drive going to New Carrollton may ride a B25 (Bowie Park & Ride) to the lot and stay aboard the bus when it returns to New Carrollton as a B24. They won't have to pay any extra fare.

B29 (Crofton-New Carrollton): The 6:22 a.m. bus from 1501 Crofton Parkway that passed Crofton Country Club at 6:30 a.m. under the old schedule now arrives 10 minutes later than under the old schedule. The 7:35 a.m. trip from Crofton Country Club leaves at 7:43 a.m. The 7:03 a.m. trip from New Carrollton leaves at 7:13 a.m.

9S (Crystal City-Potomac Yard): While departure times from Crystal City Station stay the same, the scheduled arrival times at stops have been changed to reflect delays caused by increasing ridership and by traffic congestion.

16Y (Columbia Pike-Farragut Square): Three trips have been added. A new eastbound trip leaves Barcroft at 7:48 a.m. and two new westbound trips leave McPherson Square Station at 5:28 and 5:40 p.m.

REX (Richmond Highway Express): Four new trips on this line. The two new northbound trips leave Fort Belvoir at 6:29 and 6:44 a.m. and new southbound ones depart King Street Station at 3:42 and 4 p.m.

Dazed-looking indeed -- this construction nearly doubled the time it takes me to walk from my apartment to my office.
