The Weekend and Beyond

Here's some information about issues and options you'll face in travels this weekend and during the rest of the fall.

Metro Delays
Track maintenance on the Red and Orange lines from Friday night through Sunday will cause delays as trains take turns on a single track to get around the work zones. See the full details here on Metro's Web site.

Howard Homecoming Events.
Traffic restrictions will be in effect around Howard University in Washington on Saturday between 7 a.m. and 1 p.m. Avoid the route of the 5K Run/Walk and the parade and the streets that intersect it.

The 5K Run/Walk will be underway from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m., followed by a parade from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. along the same route:

The participants will start in the 2400 block of 6th Street NW, go north on 6th Street NW, west on Fairmont Street NW, south on Georgia Avenue NW, northeast on Florida Avenue NW, north on 5th Street NW, east on T Street NW, north on 3rd Street NW, east on Elm Street NW, north on 2nd Street NW, west on Bryant Street NW, north on 4th Street NW to McMillan Drive NW where they will disband.

Watch for lots of pedestrians in the area. Police could change the street closure schedule in response to unanticipated conditions.

Beltway Ramp Closing
The Eisenhower Avenue Connector ramp to and from the outer loop will be closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. every weekday evening and some weekend evenings until Nov. 11. This closure is part of the Wilson Bridge Project and the widening of the Beltway beyond Telegraph Road, which involves demolition and reconstruction of portions of the Beltway bridge over the Eisenhower Connector.

Drivers who want to exit onto the Connector from the outer loop will be detoured to Telegraph Road North. Those who want to enter the outer loop from Eisenhower Avenue will be detoured to either the Van Dorn Street or Telegraph Road ramps.

The path and sidewalks between South Clermont Drive and Eisenhower Avenue will be closed during the construction.

Great Falls Bridge Reopening
The Virginia Department of Transportation expects to have the Springvale Road Bridge over Piney Run reopened at about noon today following a month of emergency repairs. The bridge was closed to traffic on Sept. 16 after heavy rains from Tropical Storm Hanna washed away the ground surrounding the bridge abutments.

Road Widening in Fairfax
On Tuesday, the Virginia Department of Transportation began widening the final two-lane, 2,000-foot section of Centreville Road between West Ox and Frying Pan roads in western Fairfax County. The $6.8 million project, scheduled to be done in December 2009, will provide a continuous four-lane roadway between Chantilly and Herndon, VDOT says.

In addition to widening the vehicle lanes, VDOT is creating a 10-foot wide bicycle and walking trail on the east side of the road and a five-foot wide sidewalk on the west side.

Metro Delays, Maybe
On Monday and Tuesday, the transit authority says, Metrorail passengers may experience minor delays if overnight ultrasonic testing of the Red Line tracks discovers rails that have defects and need to be replaced.

If a defect is found, the rail will be fixed temporarily and trains will be required to slow down in that area of the Red Line. That would cause minor delays. The bad rail would be replaced the following night.

Sandy Spring Sidewalk
A new sidewalk is being built in Sandy Spring along the east side of Norwood Road from Windrush Lane to Route 108, then continuing along the south side of Route 108 from Norwood Road to about 300 feet east of the Route 108 and Meeting House Road intersection. A new storm drain system will also be installed. The project should be completed by the end of the year.

Metro Paving at Glenmont
The bus loop at the Glenmont Metro station is closed for the next three weeks, and so is the Georgia Avenue entrance to the station's parking garage. Metro is repaving the area.

Until Nov. 10, the C7, C8, C9, Y5, Y7, Y8 and Y9 Metrobuses will pick up and discharge their passengers on the northbound side of Georgia Avenue next to the station. While the Georgia Avenue entrance to the garage is closed, the Layhill Road and Glen Allen Road entrances still will be open.

Rock Creek Closures
On Thursday, these roads will be closed from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for maintenance:
-- Beach Drive will be closed from Wise Road to Bingham Drive
-- Sherrill Drive will be closed from 16 th Street to Beach Drive
