The Weekend and Beyond
Here are some suggestions for your travels this weekend and beyond.
Track maintenance on the Orange and Red lines this weekend will cause delays of 25 minutes for some riders as trains take turns sharing a single track around the maintenance areas. See the full details at this page on Metro's Web site.
I-95 Northbound HOV Lane Closure
Closures of the northbound HOV lanes are scheduled from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday. From Dumfries to the Pentagon, the northbound HOV will be closed from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. At 11 a.m.. the HOV lanes will open to northbound traffic from the Franconia-Springfield Parkway to the Pentagon. At 6 p.m. the entire length HOV will re-open to northbound traffic.
Super Bowl Planning
The next big event on our national calendar is the Super Bowl on Feb. 1. If your traveling to and from a party, do some planning for this event, too, urges Kurt Gregory Erickson, president of the Washington Regional Alcohol Program.
During Super Bowl Sunday, he said, almost half of all U.S. traffic fatalities involve alcohol.
The program has these tips for safe celebrating with alcohol: Designate a driver or use alternative transportation, such as a taxi. If your hosting, include non-alcoholic drinks, never serve minors and close the bar an hour before the game ends.
Report drunk drivers. In Maryland and Virginia, you can dial #77 on wireless phones. In the District, call 311.
Closure near Peace Cross
The Maryland State Highway Administration plans to remove two sets of railroad tracks along Upshur Street between 46th Street and 47th Street near the Peace Cross in Prince George's County.
This will require a temporary closure of Upshur Street beginning Monday for up to four weeks. The detour will direct motorists to Tanglewood Drive and Buchanan Street, which run parallel to Upshur Street to the north.
Railroad passengers, remember that the free transfer to Fairfax Connector buses applies only to the regular buses. If a passenger transfers to an express bus, there's a $1.75 fee to pay.
Douglass Bridge Closure
The District is planning to close the South Capitol Street bridge from 5 a.m. to about 10 a.m. Sunday. Crews will be conducting the monthly test opening of the swing span and making minor repairs. During normal opening and closing operations, the swing span is lowered and then turned to allow water traffic to pass.
The bridge will be reopened to traffic as soon as the test opening and related repairs are completed.
Watch for daytime lane closures this week between exits 160 and 166 on Interstate 95 in Northern Virginia, where the state is widening the highway to four lanes in each direction. Work hours are 8:30 a.m. t0 2:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8:30 to noon next Friday.
