The Weekend and Beyond
Some suggestions for your travels this weekend and on through February.
Metro Track Work
There is none scheduled for this weekend, but the pace will pick up during February, causing delays for riders. Next weekend, work is scheduled for the Red Line. Add at least 20 minutes to the usual trip between Silver Spring and Forest Glen. Crews will be replacing fasteners that stabilize the tracks, so the trains will have to take turns using the track around the work zone from 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, to midnight Sunday, Feb. 8.
D.C. Street Closings
The Chinese New Year parade starts at 2 p.m. Sunday in the 500 block of I (Eye) Street NW and ends in the 600 block of H Street NW, in Washington's Chinatown. Police will close streets in the blocks around the parade route. Watch for traffic congestion in the area. The nearest Metro station is Gallery Place, on the Red, Green and Yellow lines.
Park & Ride Losing Spaces
The parking area for commuters at the Springfield Plaza will be reduced by 75 spaces as of Monday, because the property owner needs more room for plaza customers, the Fairfax County Department of Transportation says.
Restrictions on Nice Bridge
One lane of the Nice Memorial Bridge, which takes Route 301 across the Potomac, is scheduled to close temporarily between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. daily from Monday through Thursday, and then again from Feb. 9 through Feb. 12 for an annual bridge inspection. Traffic will alternate in the open lane during the closures.
Tysons Bus Detour
The route of Metrobus 23A (McLean-Crystal City Line) will be different at the Tysons Galleria service roadway from Monday through Friday next week, because of some work at the mall.
Westbound to Tysons-Westpark: Buses wil go to Galleria Drive, make a right on the west service roadway under the parking garage along the west side of the mall, another right on Tysons Boulevard, a left on Park Run Drive, and continue on its regular route.
Eastbound: Buses will come along Tysons Boulevard, loop around to the service roadway to do the stop at Park Run Drive, make a left at Tysons Boulevard, a right on Galleria Drive, a right on the west service roadway under the parking garage, a right onto Tysons Boulevard, a left on Galleria Drive, and then continue on the regular route to Crystal City.
Tysons Corner Mall will post signs in English and Spanish at the current Metrobus stop to notify passengers of the detour and of the temporary stop on the west service roadway, at the entrance to Neiman Marcus.
D.C. Pothole Patrol
The District is asking people to use the Mayor's Citywide Call Center at 311 to report potholes. The District Department of Transportation is trying to fill reported potholes within three days. Tell 311 the exact location and give as much detail as possible about the hazard.
The resulting repairs will be temporary. Permanent patches can't be done till the street temperature rises above 40 degrees.
Metrocheks Are History
The Maryland Transit Administration is reminding riders that paper Metrocheks are no longer available for employers that participate in the Transit Benefit Program. They've been replaced by SmartBenefits Vouchers, now accepted by the MTA and on the buses operated for MTA by Keller, Dillon, and Eyre Bus. The vouchers are available in $1, $10 and $30 denominations. Use them the same way the Metrocheks were used.
The MTA and the bus operators will accept previously distributed Metrocheks until the end of the day on March 6. Unused Metrocheks will still be good as fare cards on Metrorail.
Now that we're in the middle of winter, the road work schedule across the region is pretty light. But work continues on some projects. Here are a few examples.
This weekend, the District will be working on joints in the roadway at two locations, resulting in some lane closures. On Saturday, work will be done on I-295 over Howard Road SE and the Suitland Parkway. On both Saturday and Sunday, work will be underway on New York Avenue NE over the CSX and Metro tracks. All of the work will be done between 7:30 a.m. and 7 p.m.
Next week, look for single lane closures on Rockville Pike at the junction with Randolph and Montrose roads. They can occur from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Mondays through Thursdays.
