Red Line Track Fixed

The tracks near Bethesda have been repaired following Friday's two derailments, but there were some other problems with the early morning commute.

As of 6:30 a.m., Metro says, all the escalators and the street elevator on the 19th Street side of the Dupont Circle Station are out of service. Meanwhile, a disruption on the Blue and Orange Lines has been cleared. Early this morning, there were delays because of some emergency track maintenance.

While the delays were unavoidable, Metro once again failed in the communication arena. My wife was stuck on one of those trains for nearly an hour waiting for the single-tracking to get through. She said that even though the incident and single-tracking had happened before she got on the train, the first announcement she had was after she boarded the train and the doors had closed. At that point, there was no option to get off of the train. Had they had a sign or board posted at the Metro station, she could have called me and sent me to a different station to meet her and we would not have contributed to the jam of passengers stuck by Metro. How hard is it for the station manager to hang a sign somewhere in the station (like maybe in front of the entrance gates or on the window of his manager's booth) to let passengers know that there was an accident on the Red Line at Bethesda? The station manager at Grosvenor (where I was waiting for about an hour) did manage stand outside in front of the ticket gates and warn all south-bound passengers to take the bus to Medical Center to get on the train southbound (although that was still North of the single-tracking and not necessarily any better).

It's amazing to me that WMATA cannot handle something as simple as training staff to stand outside their booths and talk to passengers, announcing problems. If Metro can't find a technical solution, why not use the old fashioned method?
