DC Restores Timetable For Benning Road Fix

Mayor Adrian Fenty says you don't have to tell him that Benning Road NE is a mess. If he hadn't driven across that moonscape often enough himself, he'd know it from his constituents. They don't care about the problems with utilities, they just want to know when the streetscape will be done and the torn-up lanes will be driveable.

Standing in the parking lot of the Hechinger Mall off Benning, he said: "We keep telling them later and later and later to the point where they say 'Mayor, that's not going to work anymore.' " So Fenty announced this morning that he and the District Department of Transportation are putting the project back on its original timetable, for completion of construction between 16th Street and Oklahoma Avenue by mid-December.

Construction crews will work double shifts to make that happen, said DDOT Director Gabe Klein. By mid-August, two eastbound lanes and two westbound lanes will have a smooth surface to drive on, while work continues in the median.

And there's some more immediate relief coming for the curb lanes on Benning: DDOT is doing road paving in the curb lane on the eastbound side of Benning until 3:30 p.m. Eastbound traffic will be restricted to one lane between 20th Street and Oklahoma Avenue. Traffic delays are likely, and alternative routes would be better, though by now, I can't imagine anyone is using Benning who doesn't have to.

Now here is an article that would be appropriate for the normal DC government bashers to chime in on but because most of them dont live in DC therefore hardly ever travel that far into north east they dont know nor care. The mayor has to be getting a kickback for this project because it has been going on for this summer will be the third summer they have been working on this with no end in sight. The bad thing is it does not seem to improve from one month to the next. There is not one block of that stretch that has been paved in 2 years. They started this project at the same time the National's park was being built and they are into their second season. Nothing takes that long. Metro can build a station faster than that. The contractors are milking the city and Fenty is getting a kickback. There goal was probably to milk it during Fenty's entire tenure then fix it by the time he runs for mayor again but too many people are complaining so he had to do what he does best and hit the streets with the press. But we all know that project is just a big scam.
