I-66 mostly clear; 37 treated for minor injuries in bus crash

* Get Alerts | Weekend Tips | Live Map | Weather * The big bus crash on I-66 Westbound near Nutley Street was cleared by 8:30 p.m. Those three charter buses were carrying Rockingham County elementary students back from a field trip to the Smithsonian. 37 students and staff were brought to area hospitals for treatment of minor injuries, said Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller. The driver of the rear-most bus told an investigating trooper that he took his eyes off the road for a split second and braked too late, causing the three-bus pileup that trapped an SUV in the middle. The driver of the SUV was unhurt, Geller said. But the exit ramp from I-66 westbound to Nutley Street is still blocked. Drivers are advised to use the VA-123 exit....

Quieter Roadways but Bus Crash Remains

* Get Alerts | Weekend Tips | Live Map | Weather * Traffic remains troublesome around the bus accident on I-66 westbound just east of Nutley. As of 8:34 p.m., traffic was still backing up 12 miles on I-66 W, according to Virginia State Police. The accident was also causing backups on the outer loop of the Beltway approaching I-66. But roadways have quieted elsewhere in the region. No mass exodus out of D.C. for the holiday weekend, at least not at the moment. A pity -- those of us staying put were hoping for depopulated streets, ample parking, no wait at the supermarket......

More on the bus crash on I-66 W

* Get Alerts | Weekend Tips | Live Map | Weather * A little more information about the bus crash on I-66 westbound from Virginia State Police Spokeswoman Corinne Geller. She says that at approximately 4:50 p.m., a convoy of three charter buses were traveling on westbound I-66. The last bus failed to brake, rear-ending the bus in front and causing a pileup. The middle bus rear-ended a Honda SUV; the Honda rear-ended the front-most bus. The buses were carrying Virginia elementary school students who who had gone on a field trip to the Smithsonian, Geller said. Until school officials are reached, Virginia State Police are not identifying the school. 32 students and school personnel have been transported for minor injuries, but everybody else aboard the buses are being sent INOVA Fairfax and Fair Oaks hospitals for a checkup just to be safe. The ramp from the inner loop of...

No Winning on I-66 Westbound

* Get Alerts | Weekend Tips | Live Map | Weather * There are just some evenings when you can't win. That accident on I-66 westbound before Nutley Street is still causing big backups. All exits from the Beltway onto I-66 West are currently blocked, causing delays on the Outer Loop back to the Legion Bridge. But if you're coming from downtown, before you even make it to Nutley St. you'll have to deal with plain ol' congestion near Sycamore Street in Arlington. If you make it through all that, there's congestion near Chain Bridge Road and then some more around Haymarket and US-15 in Prince William County....

Maryland Update -- delays I-270 North and US-50 East

* Get Alerts | Weekend Tips | Live Map | Weather * A few accidents have started to clog Maryland roadways. A three-car pileup on I-270 North before MD-109 is slowing traffic and was reported at 6:21 p.m. And there's a disabled vehicle on US-50 East at Martin Luther King Jr. Highway. * Get Alerts | Weekend Tips | Live Map | Weather * That accident on I-66 westbound before Nutley Street (mile marker 62) has backed up seven miles of traffic. Vehicles are squeezing to right. All Clear by Air

* Get Alerts | Weekend Tips | Live Map | Weather * Signing on for an evening of traffic blogging from our 24-hour Traffic Nerve Center in downtown DC. Dulles, Reagan National and Baltimore-Washington Airports report no delays at the moment, though if you're trying to fly into JFK you might have a wait of about 45 minutes....

Accident on I-66, and big delays on I-66 Westbound, I-95 Southbound

* Get Alerts | Weekend Tips | Live Map | Weather * Virginia 5:30 p.m. update for you -- all from the Virginia Department of Transportation: -- Multi-vehicle accident on I-66 westbound at mile marker 62. The west left shoulder, left lane, left center lane and right center lane are closed, and backups are approximately 1 mile (though that was just minutes ago, and it's a logical guess that as people head out of D.C. with the work day ending, backups could get worse). -- There's general I-66 westbound congestion, which isn't atypical for the end of the work day. Since 5 p.m., they reported major delays due to congestion in: Fairfax County (mile marker 60, near Chain Bridge Road), Prince William County (mile markers 40 and 47), Arlington County (mile marker 69, near Sycamore Street), -- They're also reporting I-395 delays due to congestion, at mile marker 9; backups...

Beltway and Route 50 Traffic in Maryland

* Get Alerts | Weekend Tips | Live Map | Weather * Two vehicles were involved in an accident on I-95 (Outer Loop of the Beltway) at the Baltimore Washington Parkway, according to the Maryland State Highway Administration. Va. State Police Search For Road Rage Vehicle

* Get Alerts | Weekend Tips | Live Map | Weather * Following up on that road rage mention earlier -- Virginia State Police are on the lookout for a vehicle involved in a road rage incident that began on I-95 and carried over to a nearby rest area. The incident took place at around 1:50 p.m. in Prince William County today in the southbound lanes near the 157 mile marker. The suspected vehicle -- described as a black BMW with a temporary rear tag and no front license plate -- pulled into the rest area near the Prince William County Parkway along with another vehicle. The two men from the BMW walked over to the other vehicle and a verbal escalation ensued, according to the state police. Virginia Update -- Disabled vehicles on I-95, I-66 and elsewhere

* Get Alerts | Weekend Tips | Live Map | Weather * On the cusp of rush hour, let's check in on Virginia.... There are a few more incidents to report in Virginia, so let's just run through them all (courtesy of Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller). I will note some of the times the State Police got it, so if you're on the road and reading this on a PDA -- and if so, EYES ON THE ROAD -- you can be aware of whether it might impact you or not: -- A motor vehicle crash (no injuries, just damage) at I-95 Southbound, north of exit 166. They got it at 3:13, and it looks like it's finishing up, she said. -- Disabled vehicle on I-66 Eastbound at exit 60 (Route 123), call came in at 3:17. -- Disabled vehicle on I-95 Southbound, at the 160 mile marker,...

Maryland update -- Route 404 open, Route 50 slow

* Get Alerts | Weekend Tips | Live Map | Weather * At 4p.m., on the cusp of rush hour, let's check in on Maryland.... -- Route 404 opened at 2:45 p.m. and is running much better, according to Maryland State Highway Administration spokesman David Buck. -- Route 50 between Route 97 and the Seven River Bridge is pretty slow -- it's generally a bottleneck, and a presidential motorcade doesn't help much. Meanwhile, the Bay Bridge is -- cross your fingers -- still running smoothly. My apologies if merely posting this creates a five hour delay....

Traffic on the Beltway? Who ever heard of such a thing?

* Get Alerts | Weekend Tips | Live Map | Weather * Somewhat predictably, traffic is clogged up on various parts of the Beltway. According to our handy online traffic service, there's traffic on the inner loop, the outer loop, pretty much any loop that moves. So just before 3 p.m., here's your general "Check the cameras before you leave work" advisory. Looking at the traffic cameras at a variety of randomly chosen spots confirm the traffic in many places: I-495 North (at the American Legion Bridge) is incredibly packed in both directions. At I-495 and University Blvd. (MD-193) -- packed heading east. I-495 North at/near the Robinson Terminal, however -- not very crowded. At I-95/I-495 at MD 210 -- ditto. So, just check the cams if you're taking off from work and heading to parts outside of this region. (The most obvious advisory ever? Possibly.)...

I-95 Southbound Still Moving Slowly

* Get Alerts | Weekend Tips | Live Map | Weather * Traffic on I-95 Southbound remains sluggish and slow-moving. According to the Virginia Department of Transportation, there is congestion in Fredericksburg from mile marker 132 to mile marker 148. Their 511 Virginia site illustrates that I-95 South is still backed up in the Triangle area, too. A look at traffic cameras (available here) tells us that it's packed pretty much south of the Beltway and beyond....

Route 50 in Maryland seeing more traffic

* Get Alerts | Weekend Tips | Live Map | Weather * There is more and more traffic on Route 50 in Maryland over the last hour or so, from the 97 area all the way to Seven River Bridge, according to Maryland State Highway Administration spokesman David Buck. He said this was to be expected, and so that means traffic is heavier now on the two main beach routes: Route 50 has more traffic, and Route 404 is closed and has a detour open due to the accident earlier. So beach-goers should expect delays....

Accident closes Route 404 at Route 480; detour open

* Get Alerts | Weekend Tips | Live Map | Weather * UPDATING POST AT 2:10 PM: Updating/changing our earlier post -- according to Maryland State Highway Administration officials, the accident at Route 404 involved two vehicles right where 404 intersects with Route 480 (in the town of Hillsboro.) The road has been closed since 12:40 p.m. and there's a detour in place; the detour is pretty simple, running right around Hillsboro and not taking people too far out of the way, said Maryland State Highway Administration spokesman David Buck. However, be wary of taking Route 50 instead of 404 due to the detour -- he described it as a pretty small detour, while Route 50 is seeing more and more traffic. EARLIER POST: Route 404 was closed at Route 480 due to an accident, according to Maryland State Police. Traffic is now moving again, albeit slowly. Anyone heading to...

Maryland and Virginia Lunchtime Updates: Bay Bridge Clear, I-95 Clogged

* Get Alerts | Weekend Tips | Live Map | Weather * Maryland State Highway Administration officials say that nothing major is going on in Maryland right now. They said traffic was very heavy last night, indicating that a lot of people might have gotten out of town early. So far, so good. The same is true at the Bay Bridge -- lanes still open, nothing new. In Virginia, I-95 Southbound remains slow. Residuals from this morning's accident, lunchtime traffic and people leaving work early is combining, said Corinne Geller, spokeswoman for Virginia State Police. The accident this morning near Triangle/Quantico was cleared before 11 a.m., but that still added delays when lunchtime was arriving. Some things to be wary of in Virginia: -- A disabled vehicle on I-95 Southbound at mile marker 161 (a flat tire); it's on the shoulder, but that never stops people from slowing down...

Quick Updates -- Bay Bridge, I-95 Southbound, Beltway, Route 50

* Get Alerts | Weekend Tips | Live Map | Weather * Some quick updates: -- Bay Bridge currently has 3 lanes operating eastbound, 2 lanes operating westbound and no delays in either direction. -- Route 50 in Virginia has an accident blocking westbound lanes (to the west of the I-66/Route 50 crossing). -- I-95 Southbound is moving sluggishly from the Beltway to parts south. (Yes, that reads weirdly to me too.) -- Reports have a traffic moving slowly on I-495 Outer Loop of the Beltway Southbound between New Hampshire and Georgia Avenues because of an earlier accident. -- Need gas? AAA's Fuel Gauge Report says a regular gallon of gas costs six cents less in Virginia than the same gallon in Maryland. (These are average prices though, so invariably the first five gas stations you see will be the ones throwing off the averages.)...

Accident on I-95 Southbound near Quantico

* Get Alerts | Weekend Tips | Live Map | Weather * According to our online traffic service, there's an accident on I-95 Southbound before Quantico Marine Corps Base. Virginia State Police said an accident occurred one mile north of Route 619 at 9:30 a.m., and all lanes should be open as of 10:25 a.m., according to Dorothy Bernstein, public relations coordinator. According to the online service, traffic slows after Dale Blvd. (around exit 156), and now they are reporting another accident in the backup before the original accident. Awaiting for confirmation on that. UPDATE 10:40AM: Virginia State Police confirm a two-vehicle crash on I-95 Southbound at the 154 marker, near the scales. Morning Delays in Annapolis

The U.S. Naval Academy's graduation ceremonies are this morning in Annapolis, and that event -- which will include a speech from President Obama -- is already bringing some traffic to the Annapolis area this morning. According to our online traffic service, traffic is slow on U.S. 50; Rowe Blvd. is slow leaving 50 to Taylor Ave. and Farragut St., while Taylow Ave is slow from Rowe to West St. A little farther down eastbound 50, meanwhile, an accident has blocked the right lane and the ramp to Route 2. The ceremony, which is not open to the public, is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. and end at 1:30 p.m. It takes place at Navy/Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Weekend and Beyond: Memorial Day Edition

* Get Plugged In to Weekend Travel Conditions * Here are some things to keep in mind for the long weekend and next week. The Getaway All the local highway departments have suspended road work for the long weekend, so you shouldn't have any temporary lane closures to worry about. There have been some improvements in the E-ZPass lanes in Maryland. At the Fort McHenry Tunnel in Baltimore and at the tolls north of the Susquehanna River, you'll find new E-ZPass lanes on the left side that allow for a quicker passage, though it's still not up to the highway-speed toll collection you find on the New Jersey Turnpike. The Delaware toll plaza still is the rough spot. Going north, I often find it quicker to use the dedicated E-ZPass lane on the right, rather than the left. Note to self: The trip north on I-95 to New Jersey, New...

Beltway Lanes Reopen After Accident

All lanes on the inner loop of the Capitol Beltway near College Park have reopened after a serious accident that left two women critically injured and snarled traffic at the start of this afternoon's commute, authorities say. Two cars collided just before 2:30 p.m. near the exit to Rt 1. One flipped over several times and then crashed into the cement underpass at the intersection. The second car also sustained major damage. The drivers were pinned and required extrication, said Mark Brady, spokesman for the Prince George's County Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department. It took rescue workers nearly an hour to remove and transport the two women and a male passenger in the car that did not flip over. Several other cars were also damaged. The woman in the car that rolled over sustained critical, life threatening injuries, Brady said. The other woman was also in critical condition, but...

Are You Driving Less?

Three transportation items today will interest you: 1) Staff writer Chris L. Jenkins says that, according to a study released today by the Metropolitan Council of Governments, our traffic may be loosening up. That's not because we figured out something new about traffic management or got more solo drivers out of their cars and onto transit. No, Jenkins writes, this comparison of traffic in spring 2005 and 2008 more likely reflects the recession and the higher gas prices. Commenters here on the blog and letter writers to Dr. Gridlock have debated this for more than a year. At some downtown...
