A little more information about the bus crash on I-66 westbound from Virginia State Police Spokeswoman Corinne Geller. She says that at approximately 4:50 p.m., a convoy of three charter buses were traveling on westbound I-66. The last bus failed to brake, rear-ending the bus in front and causing a pileup. The middle bus rear-ended a Honda SUV; the Honda rear-ended the front-most bus.
The buses were carrying Virginia elementary school students who who had gone on a field trip to the Smithsonian, Geller said. Until school officials are reached, Virginia State Police are not identifying the school. 32 students and school personnel have been transported for minor injuries, but everybody else aboard the buses are being sent INOVA Fairfax and Fair Oaks hospitals for a checkup just to be safe.
The ramp from the inner loop of the Beltway onto I-66 westbound is closed, and only one lane is getting through on I-66 W. Geller thought the westbound lanes would be closed at least until 8 p.m. or so.
