I-66 mostly clear; 37 treated for minor injuries in bus crash

The big bus crash on I-66 Westbound near Nutley Street was cleared by 8:30 p.m. Those three charter buses were carrying Rockingham County elementary students back from a field trip to the Smithsonian. 37 students and staff were brought to area hospitals for treatment of minor injuries, said Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller.

The driver of the rear-most bus told an investigating trooper that he took his eyes off the road for a split second and braked too late, causing the three-bus pileup that trapped an SUV in the middle. The driver of the SUV was unhurt, Geller said.

But the exit ramp from I-66 westbound to Nutley Street is still blocked. Drivers are advised to use the VA-123 exit.

Bummer. Those busses really make some time in the hammer lane. No permits; even in the mountains.
