Weekend and Beyond: Memorial Day Edition

* Get Plugged In to Weekend Travel Conditions *

Here are some things to keep in mind for the long weekend and next week.

The Getaway
All the local highway departments have suspended road work for the long weekend, so you shouldn't have any temporary lane closures to worry about. There have been some improvements in the E-ZPass lanes in Maryland. At the Fort McHenry Tunnel in Baltimore and at the tolls north of the Susquehanna River, you'll find new E-ZPass lanes on the left side that allow for a quicker passage, though it's still not up to the highway-speed toll collection you find on the New Jersey Turnpike.

The Delaware toll plaza still is the rough spot. Going north, I often find it quicker to use the dedicated E-ZPass lane on the right, rather than the left.

Note to self: The trip north on I-95 to New Jersey, New York and New England was very good on the Thursday before the long weekend -- even through Delaware.

HOV Reversable Lane Schedule
This is what VDOT says about the schedule for the I-95/395 HOV lanes this weekend:

At 10 a.m., the reversible lanes close northbound. They reopen southbound at noon.
HOV restrictions are in effect, and three people must be on board 3:30 - 6 p.m.
HOV lanes will be open southbound until 2 p.m. with no passenger restrictions. At 4 p.m., the HOV lanes will reopen northbound with no passenger restrictions.
HOV lanes will be open northbound all day with no passenger restrictions.
HOV lanes will be open northbound all day with no passenger restrictions.

Closures in DC
Staying home? Here's what to watch out for in Washington: On Friday, Henry Bacon Drive between Constitution Avenue and Lincoln Memorial Circle will be closed from 7 to 11 p.m. for the Rolling Thunder Candlelight Vigil.

Saturday, it's the United House of Prayer for All People Memorial Day Parade, starting at 11 a.m., with temporary road closures along the parade route, starting at 601 M Street NW.

Sunday, we've got the Rolling Thunder Motorcycle Ride, with these streets closed from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.:

-- Arlington Memorial Circle
-- Memorial Bridge
-- Lincoln Memorial Circle
-- 23rd Street NW from Constitution Avenue to Lincoln Memorial Circle
-- Henry Bacon Drive from Constitution Avenue to Lincoln Memorial Circle
-- Constitution Avenue from the Roosevelt Bridge to 3rd Street
-- 3rd Street from Constitution Avenue to Independence Avenue
-- Independence Avenue from 3rd Street to 23rd Street
-- Ohio Drive from Independence Avenue to the Inlet Bridge
-- West Basin Drive from Ohio Drive to Independence Avenue
-- Jefferson Drive and Madison Drive

On Monday, we have the Memorial Day Parade. Henry Bacon Drive closes from 5 a.m. till the end of the parade. These streets are closed from noon till 4 p.m.:

-- Constitution Avenue from 7th Street to 23rd Street
-- Jefferson Drive from 4th Street to 15th Street
-- Madison Drive from 4th Street to 15th Street
-- 15th Street from Independence Avenue to Constitution Avenue
-- 17th Street from Independence Avenue to Constitution Avenue.

Metro Weekend Work
There isn't any work on the rails this weekend, at least none out in the passenger service areas. So there should be no delays, and you can use Metro's Trip Planner for an accurate guide to your transit trip.

14th Street Bridge Update
The latest from the District Department of Transportation is that the year-long rehabilitation of the 14th Street Bridge probably will start Tuesday night. The District said it delayed the start of the project, which involves a series of lane shifts that are likely to disrupt travel, because it wanted to make sure various traffic departments have their plans coordinated. It also meant there would be no disruptions during the Memorial Day weekend.

No VRE, No MARC on Monday
Speaking of the long weekend, remember their will be no service on the VRE and MARC trains on the Monday holiday. Also Maryland's commuter buses will not operate.

Do we know anything about the HOV lanes on 95? When will they be north or south bound?

From Dr. Gridlock: Thanks for the reminder on HOV. I went back and put the 95/395 schedule in the entry. If you're particularly interested in the Monday holiday, it's like this: "HOV lanes will be open northbound all day with no passenger restrictions."
