Traffic Alert: All Lanes on Inner Loop Open After Major Accident Near Van Dorn St.

Tanker Truck accident.jpg

All lanes have been reopened on the Inner Loop before Van Dorn Street after a cement truck overturned and caught fire this morning. The Inner Loop was closed for nearly an hour and traffic delays in the area were significant for much of the morning. Two lanes of the Outer Loop were also blocked by rescue crews, but have since reopened.

Virginia State Police report they received a call at 6:53 a.m. that a tractor trailer and several other vehicles had been involved in a wreck. According to First Sergeant Neil Johnson, a tractor trailer was disabled on the shoulder, and a service truck was assisting when a tanker truck carrying dry cement came upon the two vehicles and swerved. It tipped over and ignited, Johnson said.

The driver of the tanker truck, George Dawson III, 29, of Baltimore, Md., was transported to the hospital. He was suffering from non-life threatening injuries. Johnson said the two other drivers were standing on the shoulder at the time and were not injured. The accident caused three additional minor crashes, but none of those drivers were injured either, he added. Dawson has been charged with reckless driving, according to police.

Boss? Looks like I'll be late today. Yeah, I know I come in from Rockville to Federal Triangle, but...well...I had to make this detour, and then the traffic got all bollixed up.....you know, south of town.....

Yeah, I should be there by about 2pm.

Few things in life annoy me as much as a driver who slows down to see the accident.

Until lawmakers stop paying so much attention to the trucking industry and start caring about the general public, these events will not lessen. It is only lucky that the accident was not more severe in terms of a fatality.

When I was last in Michigan, I saw that the interstates required trucks to drive @55mph while the regular traffic zoomed along @65mph. The trucks stayed in the right lane and did not act like they were on the Indy Speedway. Michigan is certainly a major transportation state, so if they can see their way to do this and it doesn't disrupt shipment, then why not here!

familynet, How do you know the truck caused the accident and not one of the thousands of cars that go 80 instead of the speed limit, 55, on the beltway, the same people that weave in and out of lanes to get somewhere 2 minutes sooner than everyone else. Remember the speed limit is already 55 on the beltway. I'd hate to see what it would do to traffic if we told truckers to go only 45, as you're apparently suggesting!

countryroads1986 -
I think the indicator that the truck may have caused the accident is that the article notes that the driver was charged with reckless driving. Investigation may not be complete, but I'm guessing the police have enough to go on there...I agree with you regarding cars and driving habits, but this one is at least starting out to look like the cement truck driver's fault.

Was the Cement Truck on its way to his NC prison, huh?!?!
Not to bust him out, but to pour him some mob-style cement shoes for his swimming classes?!?!
