Part of Eisenhower Connector to Reopen Early

Lane Splits.jpg

The Eisenhower Connector is coming back, or at least the part of it that connects with the Beltway's outer loop. The closure in early July, for deck replacement work that's part of the Wilson Bridge project, broke an important commuter link into Alexandria and disrupted traffic on the Beltway.

At the time of the closing, project managers predicted it would remain shut through September. Instead, the reopening will occur over this weekend. It was a combination of quick construction and cooperative weather, said Jenny Rios, spokeswoman for the Wilson Bridge project.

By noon Saturday, if the schedule holds, all three lanes of the outer loop will be restored. No more split. (This is the part of the outer loop just after the squeeze down from four to three lanes, which was one of the things that made the temporary lane split difficult for drivers.) But the Connector exit still will be closed this weekend. That should reopen in time for the Monday morning rush.

While the restoration is going on, it would be best to avoid this eastern part of the Beltway in Virginia. This is the schedule for the two phases of weekend work:

At 10 p.m. Friday, outer loop lanes in the Connector area will be narrowed down to one, and it will stay that way overnight to prepare the lanes for reopening by noon Saturday.

Construction crews will work through the weekend to restore service to and from the Connector. The outer loop ramps to and from the Connector should reopen by 5 a.m. Monday. The biker-walker path between Clermont Drive and Eisenhower Avenue also will reopen by this time. No more lengthy detours.

Still closed: The exit ramp from the inner loop to the Connector. That will remained blocked into October, when the new inner loop Local lanes will be done and all inner loop traffic will be shifted to the new lanes west of the Beltway Bridge over Cameron Run.

Here's a map of the area.
