Beltway Roundup As Evening Rush Begins

[6:30 P.M. UPDATE below the original post.]

[ORIGINAL POST, 4:25 P.M.] For those of you who stayed in town, stayed at work until the end of the day and just want an easy drive at the end of your week -- here's a roundup of traffic at random points around the Beltway:

I-495 in Northern Virginia is pretty close to a parking lot. The Inner Loop at the American Legion Bridge is lurching along haltingly, at Old Dominion Drive it's moving a bit better, and the southbound traffic at the Dulles Toll Road/Route 267 is downright depressing.

In Annandale, traffic heading north on 495 at the Little River Turnpike might as well be driving those "Flinstones" cars where you pedal with your feet. (In other words, a baby could walk faster than they're moving.)

However, the further south you get, the slightly better it becomes. At I-95/I-495 at Van Dorn Street, traffic heading in both directions is actually heading in both directions. (The people heading north towards the Little River Turnpike should enjoy it before they park and set up shop for a while in gridlock.)

On the other side of the river, traffic in southern Maryland seems to be moving gracefully. I-95/495 near Andrews Air Force Base is chugging along nicely. And south of US 50, it's also moving along nicely. Traffic also slows in the northeastern segment of the Beltway, although not to an utter crawl. Traffic heading east on I-495 near Connecticut Avenue/MD-185 is also moving much slower than the traffic heading in the opposite direction.

UPDATE: An accident took place on the outer loop of the Beltway in Silver Spring, between Georgia and Connecticut avenues. Read more here.
UPDATE: Another accident on the Beltway in Montgomery County, this one taking place at River Road and causing three lanes to be closed. They reopened at 5:55 p.m. Read more here.

By 6:30 p.m., as rush hour should be petering out, let's take another stroll through the traffic cameras of the Capital Beltway...
-- In Northern Virginia, the McLean-adjacent Beltway is moving at a crawl along the inner loop.
-- The inner loop of I-495 at Route 50/Arlington Blvd. is something to behold. The traffic is moving so slowly I think the traffic camera isn't working, until I see the cars merrily cruising along the outer loop.
-- At Annandale/Little River Turnpike, both the inner and outer loop are moving briskly. This is a nice change from two hours ago, when no car seemed to be going more than 1.3 miles per hour.
-- The southern segment of the Beltway in Virginia is actually cruising along, too.
-- In fact, the Beltway all along the southern and eastern portions seems to be moving quite nicely. (Of course, that's from what we can see. There are no traffic cameras from Route 50 in Maryland up to College Park.)
-- I-495 and University Blvd./MD-193 is also moving quite smoothly.
-- At I-495 and Connecticut Avenue, near where there was an accident earlier, it's smooth sailing and limited traffic.
-- I-495 north of the American Legion Bridge is also moving along, albeit with a bit more traffic.

Safe travels, folks.
