Twelfth Street NW reopens

UPDATE (5:40 p.m.): Twelfth Street NW has reopened and traffic is returning to normal. Police officials said the suspicious package was a flowerpot placed on a sidewalk.

Twelfth Street NW between Pennsylvania and Constitution avenues is closed this afternoon, while authorities investigate a report of a suspicious package, The Post's Clarence Williams reports from the scene.

The closure is causing backups and delays in the area, and motorists should avoid that stretch of road. The investigation began about 4:40 p.m.
