Today's read: Dulles toll could rise in January

Dulles Toll Road Increase: Members of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority board will act at committee meetings today on a staff recommendation that backs higher rates. The full board is likely to take up the increases Nov. 4. They could go into effect in January. The plan would increase tolls from 75 cents to $1.50 at the main gate and from 50 to 75 cents at ramps by 2012.(Sholnn Freeman)

Setting aside the absurdity of an unelected entity having taxation authority (I know that's Utopia for the Post), what possible rationale is there for raising the toll? The road has long since been paid off; what is the airport doing with this money?

The main problem is that VDOT never owned the land under the toll road. the Airports Authority always did. So the Airports Authority essentially said "we are not letting you lease that land from us anymore", and took over the road.

The tolls are being used to fund the Metro extension. Yeah, maybe someone "promised" many years back to take the tolls off one day, but a promise from a politician isn't worth the paper its printed on in most cases, this not being an exception.

I'm sure the airports authority would be quick to point out that the toll is not a tax, but a user fee. As in, everyone has to pay a tax, but only people who use the road on Airport Authority land pay the user fee.

Well, come January, I'll no longer use the toll road. Screw you, MWAA!

Why is it the few who use the toll road are paying for public transportation? Doesn't that seem wrong? We don't need the Metro to Dulles, we live there! Why don't they start fining people using HOV lanes illegally and running the SmartPass lanes with no transponder? That should cover the cost of the Metro extension.
