Dense fog a challenge for morning commuters

Update (9:45 a.m.):The morning fog has yet to burn off in many areas.
A new accident scene includes: I-495 NB after the American Legion Bridge near the Maryland shore. Exercise caution if you're heading out.

Update (9 a.m.):This morning's dense fog advisory was scheduled to expire at 9 a.m., but accidents continue to make the morning commute a challenge.

An accident on U.S. 50 westbound near Route 704 was cleared earlier, but traffic is still slow back to U.S. 301. Also, Suitland Parkway outbound remains blocked due to an accident. Expect inbound delays as motorists slow to look.

Additional accidents have been reported at U.S. 29 NB at I-495; I-495 SB before RIver Road; Braddock Road WB at Route 123; and I-66 eastbound at I-495.

Please stay alert and be careful out there.

Update: 8 a.m.:Icy patches and fog continue to be problems in the region. Some locations with reported ice problems include: North Carlin Springs Road at North George Mason Drive; South Walter Reed Drive at South Arlington Mill Drive; and Great Seneca Highway at Kentlands Boulevard.

Additional trouble spots inculde: Woodmore Road between Church and Enterprise roads, which has been closed due to an accident; Suitland Parkway outbound at Meadowview Drive, where there are reports of an overturned vehicle (inbound traffic is slow because of rubbernecking, and fog); South Capitol Street inbound at I-295; and I-495 eastbound at I-95 in College Park.

Original post:The National Weather Service has issued a dense fog advisory for much of the region that is in effect until 9 a.m. Visibilities are less than a quarter mile in some places, so stay alert and use caution.

Also, as temperatures hover in the 30s, be alert for ice, especially where it may have formed on bridges and overpasses. Trafficland is reporting that Shady Grove Road EB at I-370 has closed due to ice this morning, and people need to seek alternates.

Already several accidents have taken place this morning. According to our traffic map, commuters should be alert for accidents on the George Washington Parkway northbound, beafore Chain Bridge Road; Baltimore-Washington Parkway northbound before I-95; I-495 outer loop before Carderock; Old Marlboro Pike between Pennsylvania and Rte. 725; and Ninth Street SW at I-395.

If you see a situation and want to alert us, post your comments here or e-mail us .
