I-66 East accident and lane closures near Beltway
8:30 A.M. UPDATE: Judging from the traffic cameras, the traffic on I-66 East is still very slow from the Beltway back to near Route 50. So that's an improvement. A relatively small one, but that's something. I-495 North is also still pretty bad.
7:30 A.M. UPDATE: Traffic cameras show that delays remain slow and steady on I-66 East from the Beltway all the way back to the Fairfax County Parkway. Meanwhile, 495 North continues to be sluggish after Braddock Road.
7:05AM UPDATE: The accident has been moved onto the left shoulder at the Beltway, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation. There was one minor injury reported, and that person has been transported to the hospital. VDOT also reports delays back to the Fairfax County Parkway. Since the morning rush is really picking up steam, expect these delays to hang around.
The traffic cameras show that there's almost no lulls between the Fairfax County Parkway and the Beltway -- between those two points, I-66 East traffic is inching along.
Separately, there was an accident on 495 North at Braddock Road. The multi-vehicle accident has been moved to the shoulder, but there will be residual delays. Again, looking to the traffic cameras, traffic on 495 North at Little River Turnpike (just north of Braddock Road) could be outpaced by a snail.
6:55 A.M. UPDATE: WTOP is reporting that traffic is backed up from the Beltway all the way back to the Fairfax County Parkway. If you haven't gotten onto I-66 yet, taking 50 could be a smart alternative.
