Update: All lanes reopened on I-495 in Fairfax

During my online discussion, I advised everyone about the emergency closing of two lanes on the Beltway's outer loop at the Route 29 overpass in Fairfax. It was possible this could have extended into rush hour.

So I want to share this 2 p.m. update: The Virginia Department of Transportation has just advised that the water main break that was the source of the problem is repaired. All travel lanes are now open.

This is the second time a water main has broken in this area (inner loop lanes were closed for almost a full day a few weeks ago). Is this the fault of the contractor or just old infrastructure?

Probably a combination of both. Old infrastructure is okay if you leave it be, but start digging around it and driving heavy equipment on top and you've got a problem.
