Headaches on the horizon

Here's a review of some overnight roadwork that could slow your travels.

Capital Beltway HOT lanes work
These closings can occur between 9:30 p.m. and 5 a.m.
Lanes closed
-- A single right lane on I-495 south collector distributor road will close at Exit 47, Leesburg Pike (Route 7) for overhead sign removal. Expect temporary full intermittent collector distributor road closures for 30 minutes after midnight.
-- Three lanes of I-495 south (outer loop) will close from Exit 49, I-66 to just beyond Lee Highway (Route 29) for steel beam erection. Expect temporary full outer loop closures up to 30 minutes after midnight.
-- Three lanes of I-495 north will close at Lee Hwy. (Route 29) overpass for bridge work.
-- Three lanes of I-495 north will close at Exit 54, Braddock Rd. (Route 620) for bridge work. Expect temporary full inner loop closures up to 30 minutes after midnight.
-- Two right lanes of Arlington Blvd. (Route 50) west will close at I-495 for bridge demolition. Expect temporary full road closures up to 30 minute after midnight.

Ramps closed
-- Ramp from I-66 west will close to I-495 south for steel beam erection. Traffic will be directed to continue west to Exit 62, Nutley St, stay to the right following signs to I-66 east, take I-495 north exit to Exit 47, Leesburg Pike (Route 7) stay to the right following signs to I-495 south.
-- Ramp from I-66 east HOV and general purpose ramps to I-495 south will close for steel beam erection. Traffic will be directed to take I-495 north exit to Exit 47, Leesburg Pike (Route 7) stay to the right following signs to I-495 south.
-- Ramp from Arlington Blvd. (Route 50) west to I-495 south will close for bridge demolition. Traffic will be directed to take I-495 north to Exit 47, Leesburg Pike (Route 7), stay to the right following signs to I-495 south.

Dulles Metrorail project
Lanes closed
-- Right lane of Leesburg Pike (Route 7) will close for 300 feet before Spring Hill Rd. for utility work.
-- Right turn lane and single right lane on Dolley Madison Blvd. (Route 123) south will close from Scotts Crossing to I-495 for utility work.
-- Two right lanes of Capital One Dr. north will close at Dolley Madison Blvd. (Route 123) for utility work.

Intercounty Connector project
I-95 near old Gunpowder Road
Late night drivers may encounter temporary 15-minute closings for Intercounty Connector bridge construction between midnight and 5 a.m. each night through Thursday.

As someone stuck on I66W with no way to get onto 495 South due to the ramp closures, I can tell you for sure that there was absolutely zero signage for the alternate route. None. Not knowing that area very well, after trying to get off on Nutley, flipping around to get on 495 South that way (finding it also closed) I was forced to just go 495 North to the GW Parkway and ride that all the way back in. It took forever.

Thanks once again VDOT for your stellar signage skills.
