Headaches on the horizon
I-66/Beltway
The Virginia Department of Transportation is restoring the merge lanes from the eastbound Interstate 66 exit ramps to northbound I-495, hoping to ease backups on I-66. The new traffic pattern -- actually, the old traffic pattern -- will allow the HOV lane and the regular lane to merge onto the inner loop of the Beltway at separate points.
Tuesday night through Friday morning, both the I-66 east left HOV exit ramp and the right general-purpose exit ramp to I-495 north will be closed each night from 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. to adjust sign and pavement markings. Also, drivers may find three lanes closed on I-495 north at the I-66 interchange during the overnight hours as workers shift concrete barriers. Watch for detours.
