The week ahead in traffic and transit

These are some of the main obstacles in your path during this short week.

Beltway near Telegraph Road
Here's the work scheduled for this week.
-- Through Wednesday, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.: Ramp from the Inner Loop (I-95/495 South) to Telegraph Road South will be closed for overhead bridge work. Detour: Take the ramp to U.S. Route 1 South to Huntington Avenue West to Telegraph Road South.
-- Through Friday, between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. the next morning: The Capital Beltway Outer Loop (I-95/495 North) will be reduced to one lane between east of Telegraph Road and the Metro overpass for overhead bridge work.
-- Friday through Sunday, overnight between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. the next morning: Ramp from the Inner Loop (I-95/495 South) THRU lanes to Mill Road/ Eisenhower Avenue will be closed for barrier work. Detour: Take the ramp to the Eisenhower Connector to Eisenhower Avenue east or west.

Metro nightly track work
Red Line: From 8 p.m. to the midnight close each night through Thursday, add at least 20 minutes to normal travel time between Medical Center and Grosvenor.

Blue Line: From 9:30 p.m. to the midnight close each night through Thursday, add at least a half hour to normal travel time between Stadium-Armory and Addison Road.

Fairfax Connector changes
The Fairfax Connector has added some trips, adjust routes and schedules, split RIBS 4 and create a new route called RIBS 5 to add service and improve the on-time performance of existing routes.The affected routes include: RIBS 1, 2, 3, 4, and Routes 642 and 644. Also, bus bay assignments at Reston Transit Station will change, and minor routing adjustments around Reston Town Center will be made to routes 505, 605, and 950. The changes are extensive. Loud bangs in Tysons
Contractors building the Metrorail extension through Tysons Corner are scheduled to perform three more tests on caissons along the northwest side of Route 123 over the next two weeks. It's the same type of testing that occurred on Jan. 7 and involves a loud bang that will be heard by nearby residents and travelers. Flaggers and police will stop traffic from entering adjacent roads during the testing.

These three caissons are near the Dolley Madison Road (Route 123) and Dulles Connector Road (Route 267) exit ramp. The next test is scheduled for today (Tuesday) between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m 1 and 3 p.m. After that, the tentative dates are Friday and Monday.

Other Dulles Metrorail work
Ramp closing: The ramp from eastbound Leesburg Pike (Route 7) to the eastbound Dulles Toll Road (Route 267) will close overnights between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. through Wednesday.

I-66 lane shift: Construction crews will be slightly shifting the lanes of I-66 eastbound from just west of the Dulles Connector Road (Route 267) interchange and Great Falls Street overnight Friday. Between 10:30 p.m. and 5 a.m., the right and center through lanes will be closed, and then between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m. early Saturday, they will re-open those lanes and close the left through lane to complete the lane shift.

Dulles Toll Road near Hunter Mill Road: Crews will close the right lane of the westbound Dulles Toll Road (Route 267) from about a mile west of Hunter Mill Road to Hunter Mill Road. This will occur Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Lane closing on Leesburg Pike (Route 7): The left lane will be closed through Friday between Westpark Drive/Gosnell Road and Spring Hill Road.

Gas line work near Capital One Building: Crews from Washington Gas will resume overnight gas main installation near the Dolley Madison Boulevard (Route 123) and Capital One Drive. Some lanes along Route 123, Capital One Drive, and Old Meadow Road will be closed during those overnight hours. Traffic to Capital One will be detoured via Scotts Crossing Road. This work is scheduled to be done by Feb. 5.

March For Life
The annual March for Life will be held at midday Friday in downtown Washington. Here's a map of the route from the rally site on the National Mall at 7th Street NW, along Constitution Avenue and up Capitol Hill to the Supreme Court. Closest Metro stations: Archives, L'Enfant Plaza, Smithsonian and Federal Center Southwest.

Route 29
US 29 (Columbia Pike) between Fairland Road and Briggs Chaney Road: Single lane closed 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays for the Intercounty Connector construction.

I-95 near old Gunpowder Road
Temporary 15-minute closings for ICC bridge construction between midnight and 5 a.m. each night through Thursday.
