The week ahead in traffic and transit

After a soggy beginning to the commute on Monday morning, here are some road and rail delays to watch the rest of the week.

VDOT restoring I-66/Beltway ramp
The Virginia Department of Transportation says it will fix a problem drivers have been complaining about for months. Workers will restore the old merge pattern where traffic from Interstate 66 east joins the Capital Beltway's inner loop.

From Tuesday night through Friday morning, I-66 east's left HOV exit ramp and the right general-purpose ramp to I-495 north will close each night from 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. to adjust signs and pavement markings. Watch also for multiple lane closings on the inner loop at I-66 at night as workers shift concrete barriers. Detours will be in place.

Metrorail construction in Tysons
Drivers in Tysons Corner should look for lane shifts and changing traffic patterns along Route 7 and Route 123

On Route 123
-- Lane closings weeknights on northbound and southbound lanes between the Dulles Connector Road and the Capital Beltway to install a new gas line,
-- Nighttime detours for traffic entering and exiting the Capital One complex, and the closing of one turn lane from Old Meadow Road onto Route 123 toward Tysons Corner Center.

On Route 7
-- Service road sections will continue to close permanently.
-- Additional mid-block left turns will be eliminated.
-- Traffic patterns on eastbound Route 7 between Route 123 and Gosnell Road will shift to make room for tunnel and station construction.
-- Retaining walls will continue to be built along the south side of the service roads along eastbound Route 7. Workers must build up sections of those service roads to the same elevations as Route 7.
-- Along Frontage Road, occasional nighttime detours and traffic pattern changes will continue.

Metro night work
Red Line: Riders between the Medical Center and Grosvenor should add at least 20 minutes to their travel time Sunday through Thursday from 8 p.m. to the midnight close.
Blue Line: Riders between Stadium-Armory and Addison Road should add at least half an hour to their travel time Sunday through Thursday from 9:30 p.m. to the midnight close.
Blue and Orange lines: Riders between Foggy Bottom and Clarendon (Orange Line) and Arlington Cemetery (Blue Line) should add at least half an hour to their travel time Sunday through Thursday from 9:30 p.m. to the midnight close.

Chain Bridge closing 2 weekends
The District Department of Transportation will completely shut Chain Bridge on two weekends for work on the bridge deck and approaches. The bridge will close at 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 29, and reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, Feb. 1. It will close again the following weekend, from 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5, to 5 a.m. Monday, Feb. 8.

Nice Bridge inspection
One lane of the Harry W. Nice Memorial Bridge (US 301) is scheduled to close temporarily. Traffic will alternate in the open lane during the closures. Dates and times: Mondays through Thursdays from about 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Work may continue for about eight weeks.
