Today's read: Metro's future
The Sunday Post had several opinion stories stemming from the decision by General Manager John B. Catoe Jr. to resign. Also, the transit authority released a more detailed list of the decisions faced by the board of directors. The board says it wants to hear from the public before it makes the decisions this month.
Metro's next chief: While no one should be too surprised by John B. Catoe Jr.'s decision to step down as Metro general manager, all of us should be disappointed. Catoe and his predecessors have been asked to operate within a system of governance that was designed -- 40 years ago -- to get a Metrorail system built in a region that had roughly half the population that it does today. Today, the challenges facing Metrorail are less about new construction and more about the unglamorous maintenance and operation of an aging system. Shouldn't the governance of Metrorail be updated to reflect this reality? (Pierce R. Homer, former Virginia transportation secretary)
Catoe's worse decision: Instead of caving in to stinging media criticism, Catoe should have stayed around to lop off more heads in Metro's hidebound safety bureaucracy and to work with the National Transportation Safety Board to implement its findings after hearings in February on last year's Metrorail tragedy. Then he could have left, with a safer rail system in place and a positive legacy. (Jack Corbett, Kevin Moore)
Metro details options: Over the weekend, Metro's staff released a more detailed menu of options for riders to consider as the board of directors figures out how to close a $40 million budget gap. There's no dessert. These are all choices with negative consequences for riders. (Dr. Gridlock)
