Flight operations suspended

7:45 a.m. Update: Airlines have canceled all flights at Baltimore Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport Wednesday, though many are expected to resume operations Thursday, an airport spokeswoman said.

Lynda Warehime, a BWI spokesman, said BWI is open, but the airlines have decided to cancel all their flights for Wednesday. She said a handful of airlines have said they expect to resume flights Thursday (AirTran, Thursday morning; Southwest, early Thursday afternoon; U.S. Airways, mid-morning Thursday; American Airlines, mid-morning Thursday), and customers are advised to call their particular airline for details.

Those who do decide to come to the airport should park in the covered garage spaces, Warehime said.

7:40 a.m. Update: Flight operations have been suspended at Reagan National and Dulles International airports, and officials expect them to remain that way through Wednesday, an airports spokeswoman said.

The problem should come as no surprise: there's lots of snow and no place to put it, said Tara Hamilton, a spokeswoman for the Washington Metropolitan Airports Authority. And with the wind moving in later this morning, officials are worried the snow that has been plowed away might blow right back onto the runways.

"The problem is everything," Hamilton said. "The problem is this is Day Six."

Hamilton said there is a slight chance Dulles might land some flights in the evening, but flight operations will be definitely be shut down through the early afternoon and likely will remain that way through the end of the day, she said.

Hamilton said airlines are "tentatively looking to resume operations Thursday," but officials will make a determination whether that is possible after assessing the runways later Wednesday afternoon.

Original Post: Officials with Dulles, Reagan National and Dulles airports said most airlines have canceled their flights for Wednesday. Airlines are relaxing their ticketing policies and waiving change fees due to conditions in the Mid-Atlantic.

Southwest has canceled most of its flights in the Washington region for Wednesday and Thursday morning. Expect other airlines to do the same.

The following airlines are waiving fees for rebooking or offering travelers other options.
