Morning commute watch

Good morning! Here's a rundown of some of the big traffic/commuter headaches facing folks in the area today. This post will be updated, but please add to the conversation but sharing your own commuting tales in the comments section.

9:20 A.M.: Traffic taking I-66 East into the District is backed up at the Teddy Roosevelt Bridge.

9:05 A.M.: Traffic on Colesville Road has lessened, as has the traffic on 16th Street. Meanwhile, in Prince George's County, there's a disabled car on US 50 West to the west of Crain Highway.

8:45 A.M.: All lanes have reopened on 16th Street heading south, but the traffic is still very snarled up around Silver Spring.

8:35 A.M.: An accident at 16th and Portal streets in Northwest has closed all inbound lanes of 16th Street heading from Maryland into the District. This intersection occurs just south of the District/Maryland border and just south of where 16th Street hits Colesville Road and Eastern Avenue. For an alternate route into the city, take East West Highway to Georgia Avenue or Grubb Road/Beach Drive.

There are big traffic jams as a result of this closure: 16th Street southbound is all kinds of jammed up on the Silver Spring side of the District/Maryland divide. Georgia Avenue heading southbound is pretty gummed up as well (just east of the Silver Spring Metro station), but at least it's moving. Colesville Road heading towards 16th Street is also very jammed up.

8:10 A.M.: An alert for MARC passengers taking the Penn Line from the Bowie station -- the Bowie tunnel is flooded, and workers are en route to access and repair the flooding, the Maryland Transit Administration reported.

7:50 A.M.: Big congestion on I-495 North for a few miles leading to Gallows Road. The accident on I-395 North just before Edsall has been moved to the right shoulder, but still could cause some delays.

7:20 A.M.: An accident on I-395 North just before Edsall Road has closed the north right lane. Since this is right after the Beltway, be wary if you're heading up I-95 or in the vicinity of the Springfield Interchange towards I-395 right now.

7:05 A.M.: A disabled vehicle on I-495 North at Georgetown Pike is on the north left shoulder, but could cause delays. I-66 East at Nutley Street is congested as usual.

6:40 A.M.: I-395 North is crowded from the 14th Street Bridge back to King Street and there's also some congestion the rest of the way on I-395 (back to the Beltway). I-66 East is backed up near Sudley Road and still backed up by Chain Bridge Road.

6 A.M.: I-66 East is backed up for three miles at Chain Bridge Road.

This morning, around 6:20 am, somebody was riding his bike down the breakdown lane of 66 Eastbound near Ballston. Seriously?? I know there are still uncleared roads and sidewalks, but 66 on a bike during rush hour?? He should be in jail.

Everyone on 66 should be on a bike. It would do wonders for the environment and obesity.
