Va. Beltway shift coming
If the weather cooperates, there's going to be some road work Friday night and Saturday on the Capital Beltway's inner loop between the Eisenhower Avenue Metrorail overpass and the Beltway bridge over Cameron Run. Traffic congestion is likely.
The work, part of the Wilson Bridge project, involves shifting lanes and closing ramps to prepare for construction in the Telegraph Road area. In the new configuration, two THRU and two LOCAL lanes in the work area will merge down to three lanes. What is now the right-most lane will become an exit ramp before the Beltway bridge over Cameron Run.
This setup is scheduled to be in place by Saturday afternoon. If weather is a problem, the inner loop shift will be rescheduled to start Saturday night and finish Sunday afternoon.
It would be best to avoid this area during the setup work, but if you must travel the inner loop, here's what you should expect on Friday night and Saturday:
-- Starting after rush hour this afternoon, workers will close exits from the inner loop to Telegraph Road South, from Telegraph Road South to the inner loop and from Telegraph Road North to the inner loop. The right-most THRU and LOCAL lanes will also be closed just west of the Metrorail overpass. The left lanes will remain open.
-- On Friday night, the right-most THRU and LOCAL lanes will remain closed, reducing traffic to two lanes. Crews will relocate barriers and place new striping in the area.
-- On Saturday afternoon, traffic will be fully diverted to the new configuration, which will comprise three lanes of traffic on the inner loop and a merging lane. The ramps to and from Telegraph Road will reopen.
