14-car train pulls into New Carrollton

A 14-car train showed up on the Orange Line Monday morning, pulling into New Carrollton Station, according to a Metro press release. Officials said in the statement that an eight-car train that was about to enter service coupled with a six-car train that was stored behind it at the New Carrollton rail yard.

Metro platforms are designed to accommodate trains with a maximum of eight cars. Six- and eight-car trains are standard.

The incident happened about 5:40 a.m. Customers began to board the train, but "were immediately asked to disembark," and boarded another train, the statement said.

Offcials said employees in the rail yard spotted the 14-car train and alerted the train operator, who removed the train from service. The train operator was removed from service and taken for drug and alcohol testing, which is standard procedure, Metro said.

In July, a train operator delivered a 10-car train to the Greenbelt Metro station. That train actually entered service and stopped at several stations before a rider notified the operator of the problem.

Love how riders have to tell that operators that they're pulling an extra slew of trains behind them...

Happenings of this magnitude is the reason why we as mass transit users have a fare hike each and every year for the past 5 years now...For incomptence, we have dollars flying out of our pockets & into theirs...DC gotta love it

Hey, all you goof-ball metro train operators...Instead of yelling at passengers, and closing doors on exiting passengers, and mysteriously putting trains out of service at the height of busy rush hour, here's an idea, count how many cars you have before you leave for service.

Or, maybe this is finally Metro's attempt at providing better service on the much crowded orange line. I say, lets have 16 car trains!

I find it interesting that the article (or the Metro press release - I can't really tell) suggests that these two trains "accidentally" coupled, thus creating the 14 car train that went unnoticed by the operator. Do the editors no longer edit?

Whew! I was worried Metro would go a whole month without another Train Operator fail (the windshield was amusing, but doesn't count)! Just in the knick of time....last day of the month.

Are there a set number of cars? I wouldn't have even known there were too many cars. Unless, you are boarding and see that some of the cars are still in the tunnel that would be a dead give away.

I'm still waiting for the day when the boards claiming "RD 2 Shady Grove ARR" actually turn out to be true.

I can imagine a pretty good photo op there as well.

I could see how this could happen. The rail pesonell, when parking an eight car train in the rail yard, backed up too far and accidentally coupled an eight car train to a six car train. Rail cars like trains couple automactically when connected. The operator is told the car number of what he thinks is an eight car train. He goes to the numbered car and pulls off. There should have been a final check before the train leaves the rail yard. Since this doesn't happen that often people become compacent.

Another new low for MetroRail. Metro doesn't need a new GM. They need someone who knows how to run a railroad.
