Headaches on the horizon

Beltway ramps closed
Several ramps in the Telegraph Road interchange of the Capital Beltway's inner loop are closed each night this week for construction as part of the Wilson Bridge project.

Through Thursday, from 9 p.m. to 5 o'clock the next morning:
Inner-loop ramp to Telegraph Road south. Detour: Use exit from the inner loop to Pershing Avenue, go left on Stovall Street and left on Mill Road to Telegraph Road south.
Telegraph Road south on-ramp to the inner loop. Detour: From southbound Telegraph Road, take the exit for Huntington Avenue west to U.S. Route 1 north to the ramp onto the inner loop.

Friday from 9 p.m. to 5 o'clock the next morning:
Inner-loop ramps to Telegraph Road north and Pershing Avenue. Detour: Use Exit 174 to Eisenhower Avenue.

This exit will reopen with a new configuration: Traffic for Pershing Avenue/Telegraph Road north will exit earlier than it does now. The acceleration lane for traffic entering the inner loop local lanes from southbound U.S. Route 1 will be extended, becoming the new exit lane. Drivers bound for Telegraph Road north will use the new exit ramp to Pershing Avenue, then bear left onto the old ramp to northbound Telegraph Road.

The second detour listed (southbound Telegraph to the Inner Loop via Huntington Avenue) seems well out of the way since you go back east. It seems as though it would be faster to take the unmarked exit to Mill Road just after crossing over the railroad tracks, make a left at the bottom of the ramp, then a right and another left, then right onto Eisenhower. You then follow it to the Eisenhower Connector and get on the Beltway there. Seems more direct in that you're going in the correct direction (and you hit fewer traffic lights), although I must concede that Mill Road is not the easiest one to follow if you're not well-familiar with it.

Or you could just cut a U-turn once you're on Huntington Avenue and go back the other way on Telegraph, since it sounds as though the ramp from northbound Telegraph to the Inner Loop will not be closed.
