14th Street lanes reopen

It's a gray, rainy morning and and going to stay that way. The consistent rain won't do any favors for your morning commute, so expect it to take a little longer or be a little slower. Here's a roundup of what's going on during this damp morning rush hour...

10:40 A.M. UPDATE: DDOTDC just weeted that all lanes are now open at 14 and Constitution.

9:50 A.M. UPDATE:
DDOTDC just tweeted that eastbound Consitution and northbound 14 Stree have reopened. Huge traffic delays continue, though, especially on I-395.

9:35 A.M. UPDATE:

-- There was a disabled vehicle on I-495/Outer Loop before University Boulevard/MD 193. It has since been moved, but delays might linger on the Outer Loop.

-- Traffic is being slowed due to police activity in the 4700 block of North Capitol Street in Northeast. Avoid the area if you can.

-- MARC Penn Line train 521 left the Perryville station 30 minutes late due to mechanical problems.

9:25 a.m. UPDATE: Problems on 14th Street really are rippling across the region. Traffic on I-395 is backed up across the 14th Street Bridge and delays extend at least to Glebe Road.

According to spokesman Pete Piringer, the accident occurred about 7:30 a.m. and involved a rescue squad that was en route to GW University. Piringer said there was heavy damage to the rescue vehicle and to the civilian vehicle. No firefighters were injured, but two people in one civilian vehicle and one in another were injured.

9:15 a.m. UPDATE: According to DDOT, there has been a separate incident at 14th and Pennsylvania. Commuters can expect delays on the 14th Street Bridge and Memorial and Theodore Roosevelt bridges. DDOt has dispatched traffic control officers to try to help with the huge problems that are resulting.

dcfireems tweeted that three vehicles were involved in the accident at 14th and Constitution. Three people were injured and transported to area hospitals.

9:05 A.M. UPDATE:

-- The accident at 14th Street and Constitution Avenue in Northwest has closed 14th Street north and south from Constitution Avenue to Independence Avenue; Constitution is closed heading west at 14th Street and heading east at 14th Street. Traffic on 14th Street heading north is being routed onto Madison Avenue, while traffic heading south is being taken onto Pennsylvania Avenue.

-- Emergency roadwork has closed one lane of I-95/Inner Loop at Suitland Parkway.

-- Emergency roadwork has also closed two lanes of I-95 North before Powder Mill Road, while the southbound lanes have reopened.

8:50 A.M. UPDATE:

-- Traffic is backed up on I-395 North at the 14th Street Bridge, possibly stemming from the earlier accident on 14th Street and Constitution.

-- There's emergency roadwork on I-495/Outer Loop at the ramp to New Hampshire Avenue/MD 650 North.

-- There's also emergency roadwork on I-95 South before Powder Mill Road.

8:30 A.M. UPDATE:

-- Roads remain blocked at 14th Street and Constitution Avenue in Northwest.

-- The accident on I-270 North at MD 28 is now just on the shoulder.

-- Another accident on I-95/Inner Loop at Pennsylvania Avenue might slow down inner loop traffic.

8:05 A.M. UPDATE:

-- An accident on I-270 North at MD 28 has closed one northbound local lane.

-- The accident on I-95/Inner Loop at Ritchie Marlboro Road is still closing two lanes and a shoulder.

-- Traffic on I-95 North remains sluggish before the Springfield Interchange.

-- The roads are still closed at 14th and Constitution in Northwest. (In particular, 14th Street northbound looks absolutely packed coming from the 14th Street Bridge. The traffic crossing the 14th Street Bridge is packed and slow, but not moreso than usual -- and, somewhat surprisingly, it's actually not having a big rippling effect back onto I-395 North. Yet, anyway.)

7:45 A.M. UPDATE:

-- A disabled car in the road on I-270 South before I-370 has closed one of the southbound shoulders.

-- An accident on I-95/Inner Loop at Pennsylvania Avenue is going to slow down inner loop traffic.

-- An accident on I-95/Inner Loop at Ritchie Marlboro Road has closed two inner loop lanes and one of the shoulders.

-- An accident on I-95/Outer Loop at MD 295 North is impacting outer loop traffic and blocking the right off-ramp.

-- An accident at 14th Street and Constitution Avenue in Northwest is blocking the roadways. Avoid that area if you can help it.

-- Fire and police activity on the 2100 block of H Street in Northwest -- you should avoid that area as well.

7:25 A.M. UPDATE:

-- Red Line delays have cleared up.

-- Fire and emergency activity on New York and Florida avenues in Northeast won't help the busy commuting route. Be wary.

-- There's a disabled car on I-395 North before Seminary Road, on the left shoulder but still could cause delays.

-- I-66 East is backed up at the Beltway, as always.

-- I-395 North is congested leading up to Duke Street.

-- I-95 North remains sluggish before the Springfield Interchange.

6:55 A.M. UPDATE:

-- Red Line delays in both directions due to a train malfunction outside Bethesda. Trains are sharing one track between the Friendship Heights and Medical Center stations.

-- An accident on 295 North at Pennsylvania Avenue in Southeast has been moved to the ramp, but could still cause some delays.

-- An accident involving a single vehicle on I-270 North at I-370 has closed one northbound lane and one shoulder.

-- An accident on I-95/Inner Loop at Suitland Parkway has closed two traffic lanes and one shoulder.

-- There's also an accident on I-95/Inner Loop south of Pennsylvania Avenue.

-- An accident on I-66 East has closed the left shoulders in both directions at the Dulles Toll Road.

-- I-95 North is still congested leading up to the Springfield Interchange.

-- An accident on I-95 South/the Beltway at Telegraph Road has closed the right shoulder, but might cause backups and delays.

6:30 A.M. UPDATE:

-- A disabled car on I-395 North at Duke Street has closed the right shoulder and could slow down traffic.

-- Fire and emergency activity on 3300 Wisconsin Avenue in Northwest. Be wary of an impact on traffic if you're commuting through there.

6:10 A.M. UPDATE:

-- There's an accident on I-95 North in Newington at the Fairfax County Parkway.

-- An accident on I-95 South/the Beltway at Telegraph Road has closed the right shoulder, but could still cause delays.

-- There's congestion building on I-95 North shortly before the Springfield Interchange, at Franconia Road/Old Keene Mill Road.

-- There's also congestion on I-95 North at Occoquan.

Failure to yield, no doubt. Kudos to the fire truck for pushing through.

I'm not sure how someone who wasn't there could assume the accident was the result of right of way and praise the fire dept. I had just crossed Constitution and heard the fire trucks coming and turned to watch. The cars had a green light and probably didn't see or hear the trucks who were moving around traffic. I did not see them slow down at 14th. The collision was as violent as I've ever seen. No kudos.
