Route 29 reopens
1:15 p.m. Update: According to the Maryland State Highway Administration, Route 29 is open in both directions. Residual delays are possible.
Original post: Route 29 at Fairland Road in Montgomery County is closed this afternoon because of a fire in a work zone. Washington Gas is working to shut off a gas line that is apparently on fire, the Maryland State Highway Administration reports.
Detour for northbound traffic: Northbound Route 29 to Fairland Road to Briggs Chaney Road and back to northbound Route 29.
Detour for southbound traffic: Southbound Route 29 to Briggs Chaney Road to Old Columbia Pike to Randolph Road to southbound Route 29.
Drivers also could use New Hampshire Avenue, Interstate 95, the Baltimore-Washington Parkway or Route 1 to get around the problem area.
