A chance to tour D.C.'s streetcars

The public will be able to step inside one of the District's new streetcars next week during a four-day preview of the much-talked-about revival scheduled for service in 2012.

The District Department of Transportation will bring one of three cars it is storing in Metro's rail yard in Greenbelt downtown for viewing starting Wednesday, May 5, at the site of the old convention center at Ninth and H streets NW.The car will be set on temporary tracks in Lot B of CityCenter DC.


DDOT is billing the event as a "Streetcar Showcase" to whet riders' appetites while construction is underway in Anacostia and along H Street and Benning Road, the first two lines of a planned 37-mile, eight-line system. Funding has still not been secured for much of the network, but it has stirred interest and debate in the District, particularly over whether the trolleys will run on overhead wires or be powered by wireless technology.

The streetcar will be open to the public May 5 through 7 from 11 a.m.to 7 p.m. and May 8 from 11 am. to 5 p.m.

DDOT also is hosting a free seminar on streetcar propulsion technology on May 6 at the Renaissance Hotel at 999 Ninth St. NW.

Excellent! The proposed routes fill in some nice gaps in the Metro system, and I'd ride them any day over being stuck underground.

I wonder if they'll have ugly wires and those crazy bouncing metal accordian things on top of them!? If not, then what'll be being shown will be deceiving. Just like when the Post showed pictures of trolleys here in DC withOUT wires (50 yrs ago) to make their point that 'wires aren't that bad' ... Yeah, sell one thing and deliver a whole different thing. Sounds like slimy salesmen.

These streetcars will be great for about six months. Then the operators will be surly, the schedule will be non-existent, they will run only from 8:30 to 5 p.m. making only stops at the Agriculture Department and the Pentagon, and the entire system will shut down anytime there is more than two inches of snow. In other words, just like Metro.

Has anyone considered a monorail? If places like Springfield and Shelbyfield can support one, surely a less sophisticated city such as DC could as well.

Come on boys and girls, can we say Gentrification!

Whites are edging the Blacks out and taking over the city. I don't blame them though, Blacks are letting it happen, and migrating to Prince George's, Charles, and Saint Mary's Counties.

One positive to the aforementioned is that the crime rate in the District of Columbia is at an all time low, while crime is up in Prince George's County. Charles and Saint Mary's Counties Police will not put up with criminals, so the crime rate is slow to increase in those areas.

All that to day, with the help of Adrian Fenty, whom I heard was gay, is the facilitator of the rapid pace of the gentrification.

Now I wonder whom will carry or be the facilitator when that fool is voted out.
