I-495 North slow at Braddock

Here's a look at the traffic and commuting headaches impacting the area this morning:

9:05 A.M. UPDATE:

-- Traffic cameras show the roads surrounding the downtown closures are moving smoothly. There's little traffic on New York Avenue, Rhode Island Avenue, 7th Street, 9th Street and throughout the immediate vicinity around the closures. Things are moving and congestion is light.

-- MARC Penn Line 417 is running 15 minutes late.

-- Traffic has lessened on I-66 East -- it's still crowded, but less so at Nutley Street.

-- I-66 West is backed up at Sycamore Street.

-- I-495 North remains slow at Braddock Road.

-- The incidents on I-95 North, U.S. 50 West and I-270 South in Maryland have cleared up.

8:45 A.M. UPDATE:

-- Another look at the traffic cameras shows a relatively calm commute surrounding the downtown closures. New York Avenue is moving briskly westbound from Maryland into the District. The roadways like 7th Street, 9th Street and Rhode Island Avenue are steadily moving and not really crowded or packed. Other downtown traffic appears to be moving smoothly. All in all, lighter-than-usual traffic suggests that people stayed home or took public transportation this morning rather than driving.

8:35 A.M. UPDATE:

-- An accident on I-95 South before Old Gunpower Road has blocked one southbound lane and one of the shoulders.

-- An accident on U.S. 50 West at MD 704 is blocking one lane and one of the shoulders.

-- An accident on I-270 South at Grosvenor Lane is going to slow southbound traffic.

-- Traffic remains heavy on I-495 North at Braddock Road.

-- The I-66 East congestion remains heavy at Nutley Street and Sudley Road.

-- MARC Penn Line train 415 is arriving at the Odenton station 25 minutes late.

8:20 A.M. UPDATE:

-- MARC Penn Line train 415 is running about 15 to 20 minutes late due to a disabled Amtrak train and general congestion. The train's regular arrival time in Washington is 8:38 a.m.

8:10 A.M. UPDATE:

-- One lane and one of the shoulders of I-95 North after MD 212 are closed.

-- An accident on I-95/Outer Loop south of St. Barnabas Road could cause delays.

-- Traffic remains backed up on I-495 North at Braddock Road.

-- The delays on I-66 East continue at Nutley Street and Sudley Road.

7:50 A.M. UPDATE:

-- Another look at our friendly neighborhood traffic cameras: New York Avenue heading westbound into the District is actually getting a bit congested. Not terribly so, but it's something. And other roadways -- 7th Street, 9th Street, Rhode Island Avenue -- are just downright smooth, with light amounts of traffic moving steadily.

The roads are distinctly less crowded than your usual weekday morning rush hour. Did we frighten drivers off of the roads with our coverage and maps? Are drivers really staying home/telecommuting/taking public transit? Let us know how you changed your commute in the comments section below.

7:35 A.M. UPDATE:

-- A disabled vehicle on I-495 North at I-66 is blocking the left lane and causing backups.

-- In an entirely related note, traffic is very heavy on I-495 North at Braddock Road.

-- There's also congestion on I-95 North/the Beltway at Van Dorn Street.

-- And traffic remains very backed up on I-66 East at Nutley Street and Sudley Road.

-- One of the shoulders on I-495/Outer Loop is blocked west of exit 27/I-95 in Prince George's County.

7:10 A.M. UPDATE:

-- Another look at the traffic cameras: New York Avenue heading eastbound is fairly crowded at Bladensburg Road. But traffic is moving and not jammed up along that roadway. On 7th and 9th streets heading north from the Mall, traffic is light. Downtown looks almost empty compared to a usual morning at this time.

-- There's traffic on I-95 North/the Beltway around Van Dorn Street.

-- I-395 North is pretty bad in many spots from the Beltway to the 14th Street Bridge. If you're taking it, expect delays.

-- On I-395 South at King Street, a disabled vehicle is blocking the right shoulder.

-- VRE and MARC trains are running on time.

6:50 A.M. UPDATE:

-- One of the I-495 Outer Loop shoulders is closed before Clara Barton Parkway.

-- Traffic is heavy on I-66 East leading to Chain Bridge Road, as well as leading to Sudley Road.

-- A disabled vehicle on I-495 South at I-66 is blocking the right lane, which will cause delays.

6:30 A.M. UPDATE:

-- Another look at the traffic cameras show that downtown Washington is still seeing light traffic. New York Avenue westbound (heading towards the summit from Maryland), 7th and 9th streets northbound (from the National Mall), 7th Street southbound (from the intersection with Rhode Island Avenue, just north of the summit) and Rhode Island Avenue westbound (towards the summit from the direction of Maryland) -- all of them are seeing light traffic, not showing signs of the closures ahead. The other roads around the immediate vicinity appear clear as well.

-- The disabled vehicle on I-95 South/the Beltway at Telegraph Road is still blocking the right shoulder.

6:10 A.M. UPDATE:

-- The Outer Loop lanes have reopened in Maryland. The I-495 North lane has also reopened in Virginia.

-- A disabled vehicle on I-95 South/the Beltway at Telegraph Road is blocking the right shoulder.

-- Traffic is getting backed up on I-66 East at Chain Bridge Road.

-- Delays on I-395 North at Glebe Road are only going to get worse, because a disabled vehicle is blocking the right shoulder.

-- A look at the traffic cameras around downtown Washington show that the traffic buildup isn't bad yet. Traffic appears heaviest on New York Avenue westbound at 4th Street in Northwest.

ORIGINAL POST:
-- A vehicle fire on I-495/Outer Loop at Old Georgetown Road/MD 187 has closed two lanes and one of the shoulders.

-- There's heavy congestion on I-395 North at Glebe Road.

-- A disabled vehicle on I-495 North at the Little River Turnpike is blocking the right lane.

-- MARC Brunswick Line train 870 is running about 15 minutes late.
