Delays on northbound 295

2 p.m. Update: A brush fire in northeast Washington is disrupting traffic on area roads.

D.C. fire department spokesman Pete Piringer said firefighters were called to the area just before 1 p.m. Monday. The fire was burning in a small wooded area near Interstate-295 and Minnesota Avenue, north of Benning Road.

Piringer said there's a lot of smoke in the area and there will be disruptions on roads.

Fire officials said it's difficult to reach the blaze because of fences, gates and railroad tracks in the area.

1:36 p.m. Update: "As of now Metro service is not affected" by the fire, a Metro spokeswoman said. "We are still running normally."

1:35 p.m. Update: Traffic camers are showing unusually slow traffic for this time day on 295 northbound. Allow extra time if you're passing through the area.

1:26 p.m. Update: D.C. Fire/EMS officials said the brush fire is udner contral. There are some traffic delays in the are, but CSX trains have been cleared to proceed.

1:18 p.m. Update: D.C. Fire/EMS officials report slow traffic on 295 north of Benning Road.

The right and center lanes are reportedly blocked by units responding to the brush fires.

1:05 p.m. Update: Officials said efforts to fight the brush fire will require CSX trains to stop. Firefighters are battling the blaze on both sides of the train tracks. This location is to the right of northbound 295, north of Benning Road.

There is also a report of a car fire on U.S. 50 westbound after Route 202. The vehicle is on the shoulder, but there may be traffic delays as people slow to look.

An additional car fire has been reported on I-66 westbound between Route 28 and U.S. 29. The fire is out, but there is activity on the shoulder. Be careful passing through the area.

1 p.m. Update: There are still no reports that this is affecting Metro service. However, D.C. Fire/EMS officials said that conditions today are favorable for brush fires: it's dry and windy, and there is low humidity.

12:55 p.m. Update: Officials said the fire runs alongside 295, too. There may be traffic delays.

Original post: D.C. Fire/EMS officials said there are reports of brush fires in multiple locations north of Benning Road NE near CSX and Metro tracks and Minnesota Avenue. However, Metro hasn't reported any disruption in service along the Orange Line.
