VRE trains resume service

5:55 P.M.: VRE says the next train leaving Union station will be Amtrak Train 171, which will allow Manassas and Burke riders to board "without a step up."

5:45 P.M. UPDATE: Trains 335 and 311 are canceled, according to VRE.

5:30 P.M. UPDATE: Train 303 is crowded and will not stop in Crystal City, VRE says. Train 305 is running behind it and will take passengers.

5:15 P.M. UPDATE: According to VRE, the next VRE train departing Union Station will be a Fredericksburg train

4:50 P.M. UPDATE: VRE says trains are on the move again. Passengers should expect crowded conditions.

4:30 P.M. UPDATE: VRE says it has confirmed with CSX that the railroad will open soon. No word on when.

3:45 P.M. UPDATE: VRE officials are recommending that riders look for alternate ways home. Officials say there are not enough buses to accommodate a rush hour crowd and they're still awaiting word from authorities on when trains can move.

2:50 P.M. UPDATE: VRE officials said they are still awaiting word from authorities on when trains can move, and are still exploring alternate transportation for passengers.

2:45 P.M. UPDATE: Ryan Lange, a spokesman for VRE, said CSX informed them that traffic was stopped, and he was unsure where the stop order came from, but it did not originate with VRE.

"But nothing's moving," Lange said, including all freight, passenger and commuter trains.

2:30 P.M. UPDATE: The Post's Matt Zapotsoky reports that a man, apparently armed, has barricaded himself inside an Alexandria apartment building, and the Alexandria SWAT team is working to get him out, authorities said.

Alexandria Police have been on the scene in the 4800 block of Eisenhower Avenue for several hours, authorities said.

The man is alone in the apartment, and others in the roughly 40 unit building have been advised to evacuate if needed, police said.

Police said they have not asked trains in the area to slow or stop.

Original post: VRE says police activity on the tracks south of Alexandria is causing serious delays. The rail agency is trying to get buses to move passengers. Meanwhile, some Amtrak customers heading to New York from Union Station report that they're being told to expect delays because their train is being delayed. Amrak Train 1094 is affected. VRE trains 301 and 325 are at least 25 minutes late.

What kind of police activity?

Posted by: Tony-Tony-Tony | April 2, 2010 2:23 PM | Report abuse

I was coming back from Old Town on Eisenhower Avenue around 11:30 this morning and the police had the road blocked off near the FedEx place. We all had to turn around and take the Beltway to get to Van Dorn. I wonder if this was related to whatever the train problems are, as the tracks roughly parallel Eisenhower.

I guess the 2:30 PM UPDATE answers my question!

Um, Eisenhower Ave runs next to the METRO tracks, not the railroad tracks (nearby, but Metro is closer). Why on earth would they shut down rail traffic?

Come on!

Hurry up and get it over with already!

What kind of an A hole picks a Friday for hostage situations?!

Some people are so inconsiderate.

:-(

Amtrak train from Newport News is moving. My mom is on the train and she just sent me a text msg....

Posted by: vjbutts75 | April 2, 2010 3:42 PM | Report abuse

Trains were moving.. they are now stopped in Woodbridge...

Posted by: vjbutts75 | April 2, 2010 4:05 PM | Report abuse

So WHO ordered the shutdown? CSX? If so, why (since the police apparently didn't ask them to)?

I'm currently sitting on one of the Amtrak trains not being allowed to leave Union Station and head south...sigh :(

Per the VRE website at 4:12PM:

We have received information from the host railroad that once they are assured that police out of right of way that train travel will resume. We anticipate that trains will begin moving at about 4:15pm

Expect delays to all trains due to rail traffic congestion.

Another update from VRE at 4:25PM:

Confirmed with CSX that the railroad will open soon...still making sure that the tracks are clear of all police.

Sorry to sound so crass...but have the SWAT team finish this selfish guy off and lets get on with rush hour.

Posted by: thetan | April 2, 2010 4:31 PM | Report abuse

It's a beautiful day...just get out and walk the rest of the way.

WTOP reports that trains are moving.

It's a beautiful day. Maybe I'll just walk to Manassas from downtown DC. Sorry the guy's being evicted but this just sucks. I want to know why CSX decided to shut down all rail traffic and Metro did not when the Metro tracks are closer. Is this indicative of Metros usual general disregard for their riders safety or is CSX being overly cautious? Couldn't CSX have just run trains at a restricted speed?

Posted by: tink712 | April 2, 2010 4:52 PM | Report abuse

Run trains at a restricted speed? You mean to make better targets? Just run behind a Metro train, Metro riders already know they're risking their lives getting on a train.

Posted by: jiji1 | April 2, 2010 5:33 PM | Report abuse

I just got off the VRE 301 train in Fredericksburg. I think a guy on the train with me on the train said it best, "My day isn't as bad as that guy who was evicted". Did getting stuck on a train for the last 5 hours suck, yeah, but I'm home now and the guy that got evicted is at best out of a home and is going to jail. People really need to keep things in perspective.

___________

Not that I disagree about risking one's life riding Metro, I have to say that VRE/Amtrak and Metro run on totally different tracks.

I also wonder along with tink712 - was Metro ignoring possible dangers or was CSX being overly careful?

I don't ride the VRE because it is over crowed with self important, rude, undereducated, government workers.
