Headaches on the horizon

For late-night drivers, the HOT lanes project on the western side of the Capital Beltway in Virginia is almost always the project with the highest impact, though the exact locations vary. Here are the spots likely to cause you the most concern between 9:30 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Beltway HOT lanes
-- I-495 west (inner loop) will close at Exit 169 B/A (Route 644) for steel beam erection. Through traffic will be directed to take Exit 170 to I-395 north to Exit 2B (Edsall Road west) and stay to the right following signs for I-395 south. Then take Exit 1C to I-495 north (inner loop).
-- Three right lanes and the collector distributor road of I-495 south at Exit 54 (Braddock Road) will close for bridge demolition.
-- Two right lanes of I-395 north at I-495 will close for steel beam erection.
-- Two left lanes of Chain Bridge Road (Route 123) at I-495 will close for overhang removal.

I-95 Widening project
Two right lanes of I-95 north between Exit 160 (Route 123) and Exit 163 (Route 642) will close from 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. for bridge joint repair.

Fairfax County Parkway extension
A single right lane will close on I-95 south from Exit 167 (Backlick Road/Fullerton Road) to just north of Exit 166 (Fairfax County Parkway) for barrier movement from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. A second lane will close by 10:30 p.m. Two lanes will remain open to through traffic.

Dulles Metrorail project
This work is set for 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.
-- A right lane will close on Gosnell Road south at Leesburg Pike (Route 7) for utility work.
-- A right turn lane and right lane of Dolley Madison Boulevard (Route 123) south between Scotts Crossing Road and Capital One Drive will close for utility work.

Ohio Drive
From 7 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. tonight and Thursday night, you may find Ohio Drive closed from 23rd Street and Independence Avenue to the ramp to Lincoln Memorial Circle. Also, Old Constitution Avenue may be closed from the ramp to Lincoln Memorial Circle to Rock Creek Parkway. (Old Constitution is the roadway just south of Constitution Avenue where it meets the Roosevelt Bridge.)

Maryland 201/Beltway
Drivers may find the shoulders closed on the Beltway as crews work on the Kenilworth Avenue (MD 201) bridge above. There may be temporary lane closings on both Kenilworth and the Beltway.

Metrorail
Red Line: From 10 p.m. till the midnight closing tonight and Thursday, riders between Medical Center and Friendship Heights should add at least half an hour to their normal travel times. Workers are replacing old rail fasteners to stabilize the tracks.
Blue/Orange lines: After 10 tonight and Thursday, add at least 20 minutes to travel time between Federal Center and Eastern Market. Workers are upgrading track circuits.
Yellow Line: After 11 tonight and Thursday, add at least 20 minutes to travel time between Pentagon City and L'Enfant Plaza. Workers are replacing rail fasteners.
