Headaches on the horizon

Seems like there's practically no stretch of the Capital Beltway unaffected by some construction program. In a previous posting, I told you about the plans for emergency repairs this weekend at the Telegraph Road interchange. Maryland now is announcing a late night lane-closing schedule near the Kenilworth Avenue bridge.

Beltway/Kenilworth Avenue
The Maryland State Highway Administration says it will temporarily close the two right lanes on northbound I-95/I-495 (the outer loop) in the Greenbelt area beginning Thursday night between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. This is a new phase in the bridge maintenance project that began in late April.

Beginning Sunday night, double lane closures will occur at 10 p.m. and up to three lanes may be closed after midnight. (That would leave only the left lane open.) This phase should be completed by 5 a.m. Friday, May 28. Alternative routes are US 29, US 1, MD 295 (Baltimore-Washington Parkway), MD 193 and MD198.

Beltway HOT lanes
These closings are scheduled for 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.
-- Three right lanes of I-495 south at Gallows Road (Route 650) will close. Expect full roadway closures up to half an hour after midnight.
-- Three left lanes of I-495 north at I-66 will close for steel beam erection.
-- Two left lanes on I-395 north at I-495 will close for bridge work.

Seat belt checkpoint
You should always buckle up, but this evening, you might get fined for not doing so if you pass through the police checkpoint at Bladensburg Road and Eastern Avenue NE. D.C. and Prince George's County police have been checking for violators since 3 p.m. and plan to continue until 9 p.m.

Dulles Metrorail
This work is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.
-- Two lanes of Leesburg Pike (Route 7) east from the Dulles Toll Road (Route 267) to Spring Hill Road will close for utility work.
-- A single left lane of Leesburg Pike (Route 7) west from Westpark Drive to Spring Hill Road will close for utility work.
-- A single left lane of Dolley Madison Boulevard (Route 123) north between Old Meadow Road and Anderson Road will close for utility work.

Wilson Bridge
The bridge is scheduled to open at 8:15 p.m. Thursday.
