Headaches on the horizon

Travelers will encounter hot and humid conditions through Thursday, but the of thunderstorms isn't strong until late Thursday, the Capital Weather Gang says. I've picked out some highlights from the long list of overnight road and rail projects in the D.C. region.

I-95 widening
Ashley Halsey III reports that drivers are likely to encounter major delays on southbound I-95 at Lorton on Wednesday and Thursday nights. Some lanes will be closed between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. while crews replace overhead signs. (Keep that in mind if you're contemplating an early getaway for the Memorial Day weekend.)

Beltway HOT lanes
This work is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. [See my posting about how the HOT lanes will work.]
-- I-495 west (inner loop) will close at Exit 169 B/A (Route 644) for steel beam erection.
-- Two right lanes of I-495 north at I-66, will close for steel beam erection.
-- Three right lanes of I-495 south at Braddock Road (Route 620) will close for overhang removal.
-- Three left lanes of I-495 north at Little River Turnpike (Route 236) will close for bridge demolition. Expect full roadway closures of up to 30 minutes after midnight.

Dulles Metrorail
The Dulles Access Road (Route 267) eastbound will close between Spring Hill Road and Chain Bridge Road (Route 123) between 9:30 p.m. and 5 a.m.. Traffic will be detoured to the eastbound Dulles Toll Road near the Spring Hill Road/International Drive exit after the main toll plaza, well in advance of the work zone. Detoured drivers will not pay a toll.

Beltway/Prince George's
The Maryland State Highway Administration is resurfacing 4.6 miles of the Beltway's outer loop between Branch Avenue and D'Arcy Road. The project also includes a half-mile of Pennsylvania Avenue between the Beltway and Old Marlboro Pike/Westphalia Road and the exit ramp from Forestville Road to the outer loop.

Watch for single lane closings on the Beltway from 8 to 9 p.m. and then double lane closings from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night through Thursday. On Pennsylvania Avenue, watch for double lane closings from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night through Thursday.

Metrorail late-night delays
Riders on most lines will encounter late-night delays through Thursday night. Riders who use Farragut North Station, note that Metro plans to work on the platform ceiling problem near the L Street entrance. See posting about what's up on the Red Line.

Red Line: Add at least half an hour to travel time between Rhode Island Avenue and Fort Totten after 10 p.m. Workers will be strengthening the surface underneath the tracks. Every other Red Line train toward Glenmont will terminate at Rhode Island Avenue and head back toward Shady Grove.

Add at least half an hour to a trip between Farragut North and Judiciary Square after 10 p.m. Workers are scheduled to repair the ceiling at Farragut North where structural problems were discovered in December.

Blue Line: Add at least half an hour to travel time between Stadium-Armory and Addison Road after 9:30 p.m. Workers will be replacing concrete slabs under the rails

Blue and Yellow Lines: Add at least half an hour to travel time between Braddock Road and Pentagon City after 11 p.m. Workers will be replacing old rail fasteners. All Yellow Line trains will terminate at Mount Vernon Square.

Green Line: Add at least 20 minutes to travel time between Greenbelt and College Park after 8 p.m. Workers will be welding rail.
