Pr. George's creates traffic safety unit

Motorist fatalities | Motorcycle fatalities

Prince George's County police have created a new unit to focus on traffic safety.

Police said Tuesday the unit will work to reduce traffic fatalities and injuries. Officers will provide traffic enforcement and truck inspections in areas where there are high numbers of crashes.

Officials say even as crime has dropped, Prince George's continue to lead the state in fatal crashes. Police Chief Roberto Hylton says by monitoring those who run red lights, checking on seat belt use and focusing on other violations, drivers will become more alert and encouraged to adhere to traffic laws.
