Routing through road work
A Maryland driver who lives near the Wilson Bridge wanted to know the best route to Dulles Airport. He was thinking about all the construction along the Capital Beltway in Virginia. I said that since it was a daytime trip, I'd stick with Wilson Bridge, around the Beltway and out the Dulles Access Road. But I invited your suggestions. Here's one.
Dear Dr. Gridlock:
Re your suggested route from Maryland to Dulles Airport:
I would have recommended Wilson Bridge to Route 1 North, to Route 110 West, exit at Key Bridge, take George Washington Parkway North to I-495 South to the Dulles Access Road.
Two bad backups these days are the I-495 inner loop in Alexandria at Telegraph Road and I-66 Westbound at the Dulles Connector. They take out the left lane for the Silver Line construction and I-66 Westbound is backed up for most of the day, from the morning rush to late afternoon, when they reopen the left lane.

What's your recent experience with the big projects along D.C. area highways? I've written guides to the HOT lanes construction and the Dulles Metrorail construction. On Sunday, I focused on the X where they meet: Tysons Corner.
We can talk about projects and delays that concern you -- whether they're on the roads or rails -- during our weekly online chat at noon. Here's a link to the discussion.
