Metro budget hearing Wednesday

Metro will hold a public hearing Wednesday on the transit agency's capital budget and improvement program for the fiscal year that starts July 1.

The capital budget, which is expected to total $709.3 million, includes projects such as replacing Metro's older 1000 Series rail cars, as well as old buses and bus garages. It also includes rehabilitating the Red Line between Dupont Circle and Silver Spring, and the Blue, Yellow and Orange lines between Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Stadium-Armory Metrorail stations, according to Metro.

The complete list of projects is available in the public hearing docket posted online at The hearing is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. at Metro Headquarters, 600 Fifth St. NW.

Another way Metro could raise more money -- take the system currently used here in Springfield (buses that veer away from a local connection at Franconia/Springfield and instead charge an "express" fare for a half-hour scenic trip to the Pentagon) and apply it to other regions. For example, replace all local buses in Arlington with "express" buses that (eventually) connect to Metrorail at Bethesda; the locals in Rockville with "expresses" to Largo, etc....

Metro says the fare increase is to avoid service reductions, but services have already been reduced; they simply didn't announce it. Trains used to leave the Shady Grove platform in the morning every 3-4 minutes. This morning we sat there for 10 minutes with no explanation, and that's been the norm for the last year or so. Sometimes the train sits there for 5 minutes before the operator even shows up on the platform. Either the operators are derelict, or Metro is spacing the trains further apart these days.

And of course with a busy station like Shady Grove, even a few minutes of delay means the trains are crowded when they finally leave the platform to pick up yet more riders down the line. And overcrowding increases the potential for even further delays. It's pretty much a no-win situation for the riders.
