6:20 p.m. Update: Cameras several blocks before the scene of the repair show traffic creeping along. It's unclear if the repair will be completed by Thursday.

The 79-year-old, 12-inch main burst at about 3:30 a.m. below the eastbound lanes.

"What's complicating the repair is there are a number of gas and electric lines in the area of the main, so we have to be careful and dig with shovels," said Alan R. Heymann, spokesman for the D.C. Water and Sewer Authority|. "We're hoping to have it done by morning rush."

2:55 p.m. Update: District Department of Transportation Officials say that eastbound vehicles will be detoured around the work area in the 1600 block of New York Avenue NE via the traffic circle at Montana Avenue. Suggested alternate routes are Rhode Island Avenue and Bladensburg Road. Depending on where you start your journey, DC 295 is also an option.

1:05 p.m. Update: District officials warn that the repairs on New York Avenue at Montana will likely continue into rush hour, causing huge delays. Drivers should use alternate routes, such as Rhode Island Avenue or DC 295.

8:10 A.M. UPDATE: The outbound New York Avenue lanes remain closed. An update from the District's Water and Sewer Authority: Their crews are repairing the broken 12 inch water main, located on New York Avenue between 16th Street and Montana Avenue in Northeast. Some people in the area will see a disruption in water service until the repairs are finished.

7 A.M. UPDATE:
Outbound traffic is still being detoured from New York Avenue onto Montana Avenue. According to the District Department of Transportation, this is having only a minimal impact on inbound rush hour traffic.

6:15 A.M. UPDATE:
New York Avenue's eastbound traffic is being detoured onto Montana Avenue because of the traffic signal, the District Department of Transportation just Tweeted. This is causing delays on eastbound New York Avenue.

5:50 A.M. UPDATE:
Power has been cut to traffic signals at Montana Avenue and New York Avenue, which is impacting both east and westbound signals. There is also a police officer on scene directing traffic, according to the District's Emergency Management Agency.

A water main break is blocking outbound traffic on New York Avenue at Montana Avenue NE. Inbound traffic is still getting by but motorists should try to avoid the area.

Power to the traffic signals has been cut.
