See and be seen on Halloween
Here's a list of Halloween safety tips for everybody from the Maryland State Highway Administration. Drivers -- Stop for pedestrians. -- Obey the speed limit. Speeding only makes it more difficult to stop unexpectedly. -- Be especially cautious during peak trick-or-treating hours between 4 and 9 p.m. -- Enter and exit driveways slowly. -- Be alert for children darting across the street. -- Watch for children crossing between parked cars. -- When driving children to and from different activities, make sure all seat belts are fastened and let children out of the car on the curbside. -- Never drink and drive. Designate a sober driver. Pedestrians -- Look left, right, and left again before crossing the street. -- Cross at crosswalks or intersections. -- Be sure to see and be seen. Avoid dark clothing, wear bright colors and use reflective devices such as vests and blinking lights. -- Avoid costumes...

Metro adding service for Monday night football
The Morgan Boulevard Metrorail station will be open beyond the regular midnight close Monday night to take fans home from the football game at FedEx Field. No other stations will be open for people to enter, but if you're on one of those Blue Line trains from Morgan Boulevard, you will be able to transfer to other trains on your way home. The last Blue Line train from Morgan Boulevard in the direction of Franconia-Springfield will leave at 12:27 a.m. But if the game goes into OT, Metro says it will keep operating to get people home. There will be extra trains anyway to handle the crowds at Morgan Boulevard, which is the closest station to FedEx Field. The stadium is a little less than a mile north of the station. Drivers who park at Morgan Boulevard, which has 635 spaces, or at Largo, which has 2,200, will have to...

Many streets to close for Sunday marathon
The annual Marine Corps Marathon is this Sunday. Anytime we have an athletic event on a Saturday, I hear from plenty of drivers about the traffic disruptions. That was the case with last Saturday's Bike DC event. But the Sunday ones, like the Marine marathon seem much easier for people to handle. Still, many important streets and roadways will be blocked from 4 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sunday, and congestion is likely to ripple out from the marathon area. Police reserve the right to expand the list as needed. The run starts at 8 a.m. in Arlington, crosses into the District, then returns to Arlington. Metrorail is going to open two hours early, at 5 a.m. on Sunday. Metrobuses that normally use the Pentagon Transit Center will be relocated to the Pentagon City Metrorail station between 4 a.m. and 4 p.m. So if you normally travel to the Pentagon Metrorail...

Early Morning Chase Leads To Beltway Closure
A police chase beginning in Maryland early this morning ended in Virginia with Beltway closures and a traffic nightmare for morning commuters. The chase began in Montgomery County and moved onto I-495, taking the American Legion Bridge into Virginia. At some point the Maryland police reported that they terminated their pursuit, while Virginia State Police took up the the pursuit of the car heading south on I-495. The Virginia State Police followed the black Mercury Mountaineer, which rammed state police vehicles at least two times, spokeswoman Corinne Geller said in a news release. The car was brought to a stop heading south on I-495 just south of Braddock Road. This resulted in a closure of I-495 lanes and a big traffic backup as rush hour began. All southbound lanes reopened by 7:12 a.m., the state police reported. The driver of the vehicle was Andre Tyrone Washington, 24, of Fayetteville, N.C.,...

The Weekend and Beyond
The District will be awash with events and closings that may make getting around this weekend more fun than it has any right to be on a Saturday or Sunday. Sunday should be the more challenging of the two days. To begin with, Metro will close two stations and part of a third for the entire Columbus Day weekend. The Waterfront-SEU and Archives-Navy Memorial-Penn Quarter Metrorail stations will be completely closed, and there will be no Green Line service at the L'Enfant Plaza Metrorail station, from 10:30 pm on Friday through Monday. The Blue and Orange Lines at the L'Enfant Plaza Metrorail station will not be affected. Service will resume at all Metrorail stations on Tuesday. Metro will provide free direct shuttle bus service all weekend between the Anacostia, Navy Yard and Gallery Place-Chinatown stations. For more information please visit www.metroopensdoors.com. For north-south travel in the downtown area, residents and...
